Survey invitations often describe the topic of the survey. A simple, classic example of how this biases results: survey recruitment materials about bird watching led to higher estimates of the % of people who engage in bird-watching. doi.org/10.1093/poq/...

It is remarkable that the west is committing to spending 5% of GDP on defence, and almost no one has made the case that the most pressing threat to our security this century is climate change and we should be spending more on tackling that.

I don't know who needs to hear this but I wrote a book about why we hate some animals so very, very much.

And also why we LOVE some animals...even when they cause some of the same problems as the animals we love to hate!

Anyway it's on sale. www.harpercollins.com/products/pes...
Pests
An engrossing and revealing study of why we deem certain animals “pests” and others not—from cats to rats, elephants to pigeons—and what this tells us about...

My latest for American Scientist Magazine helps give scientists the tools to fight back against politicized charges that our research is silly or pointless- tools that will work whether you’re asked “why are we funding this” from your asshole uncle at Thanksgiving or an asshole US Senator.

“Why Are We Funding This?”
Long-standing myths about “silly science” have contributed to the reckless slashing of government-supported research.

Since I have been getting so many questions recently about transformational adaptation, I just want to remind everyone that it's actually a very easy concept, explained very clearly by this diagram.
lisaschipper.bsky.social
Oh thank goodness, now I understand what transformational adaptation is all about.
A very complex diagram showing three dimensions with many arrows, boxes and circles that in some way are trying to explain transformational adaptation to climate change, while mostly just showing that it is extremely, extremely complex.
