Several of my great new colleagues at @sotonpolitics.bsky.social and their collaborators have to put together this blockbuster paper on what happened when the UK Labour Party adopted radical right rhetoric on immigration. A must read for centre left parties across Europe.

I spoke to @newstatesman.com on the results, where my main point from the paper was that there is *no* modelling strategy that shows a positive effect for Labour.

Why are working class people under-represented in legislatures?

We propose one potential mechanism: working-class individuals are *perceived* as less likely to achieve political success, and are subsequently 'pragmatically' discriminated against.
