Hi Bluesky! I'm Harry, a satellite imagery nerd covering current and past spaceflight-related events (sometimes other topics too.)

I run spacefromspace.com, a site where you can explore satellite images past and present for free.

I'll be sharing cool images and some stories along the way here! 🛰️
A very high resolution satellite image of NASA's Space Launch System rocket on Launch Complex 39B in November 2022. An Umbra synthetic aperture radar satellite image (with annotations) showing construction at China's Wenchang Space Launch Site. A very high off-nadir KH-9 HEXAGON declassified satellite image of Kennedy Space Center, Florida. A declassified CORONA spy satellite image of Baikonur Cosmodrome in 1968, including an N1 rocket standing on its launch pad.

People who share satellite imagery while knowingly breaking the licence because 'i don't care' are the ones who ruin it for the rest of us.

It's hard enough to get usable imagery as it is.

Umbra: How much resolution would you like?
Me: All of it.
UMBRA-09: I gotchu.

True story.

Should be a great event for those interested in researching Cold War intelligence. Speakers are @deselv.bsky.social of the Institute for Historical Scholarship at Humboldt University in Berlin; Gary Keeley former historian at CIA; and Mark Kramer, director of the Cold War Studies Project at Harvard.

Thinking about this a lot.

Basically the equivalent of Twitter moving to 'X'. Throwing away so much brand recognition for what?

Maxar retires its name, rebrands as Vantor and Lanteris

The Maxar name is disappearing from the space industry as two successor companies emerge with distinct identities: Maxar Intelligence will now operate as Vantor, and Maxar Space Systems will go by Lanteris

Here are two comparisons of the site taken by CORONA spy satellites on September 15, 1964 and June 28, 1968.
A comparison image of the Semipalatinsk Test Site in Kazakhstan taken by CORONA spy satellites on September 15, 1964 and June 28, 1968 after a nuclear explosion was used to stop a gas leak in 1965. The before image shows an untouched landscape with a river winding through it. The after image shows a large crater filled with water and a large lake next to it.
