Ubisoft games love taking potent imagery and defanging it. Unless it has the name “Tom Clancy” in the title, in which case it will happily send you to Bolivia and shoot up an entire country for America, or insist it’s cool to assassinate foreign leaders as long as you don’t get caught

It’s genuinely a skill to make a game like Far Cry 5, a game that outwardly appears to be targeted at the ascendant Christofascist movement in America, and have it shrink away every chance it gets. But it’s the kind of skill that should make Ubisoft execs stare at the ceiling in shame every evening.

It especially bugs us because we typically buy remasters for games we don't already own, and just want a hassle-free way to play a classic as it existed. If we can't get that, we're either seeking out the PS1 version or losing interest entirely until the mood strikes us next.

From where we’re sitting, it’s a little distressing for a remaster to go back and bend a game so it better fits what people falsely “remember” about it now, but we are extremely ill-equipped to say how much the new stuff messes with the original’s tone
