If you are trying to get over arachnophobia, as I am, I suggest subscribing to the r/spiderID subreddit! Lots of cool spider facts and people fawning over spiders in such an endearing way. Plus, a spider on your homepage every day helps you get used to them.

Raskin: "It's not lost on anyone that shutting the government down allows them not swear in our new colleague, Ms Grijalva from Arizona, who would be the 218th signature to discharge the Epstein files and to put a vote on that on the House floor."

Trump's higher ed ransom note is here - everyone would have to acquiesce to their unprecedented demands or not be "given priority for grants," plus they can demand "reimbursement" for "violations" www.wsj.com/us-news/educ...

A mechanism to enforce fealty. An attack on academic freedom and democracy

Some problems have simple solutions. This new “Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education” is one. The answer is simply saying no.

Simple does not mean easy. But Brown, Dartmouth, MIT, Vanderbilt, Univ of AZ, UPenn, USC, UT Austin & UVA must understand what they’ll lose if they sign on.

I have wrapped up my postdoc and am officially an ex-academic - and now looking for a new role *full-time*!

I’m seeking roles in policy and regulatory spaces, climate strategy, ESG, and similar, ideally based in CA, remote, or outside the US, but I’m open to roles in solid blue states!

Trump's very first example of the Smithsonian's "corrosive ideology" was an exhibit that correctly stated "Race is a human invention." How is scientific consensus (that biological races don't exist in humans) corrosive? We are asking scientists to co-sign our statement: forms.gle/kqKQF9CZ3jPB...

A pattern is developing where everyone who fights back against a Trump attack inevitably wins with their reputation much better than before, and everyone who caves to him looks like shit and has Trump coming back for more a month later.

Please share with anyone who cares about NSF support for graduate students and take 30 seconds to sign and leave a comment.

The deadline for the 2025 Graduate Research Fellowship Program is about one month away and literally no one can apply. #NSFGRFP

This is a tangential thought to David's important message, but... I'm fascinated by the idea of "physiological fragile" fishes. Goosefish are so freaking fragile, and I would love to know why. I have some guesses. If you're a fish physiologist, it's a great research question.

It’s truly baffling to me that so many of these stories focus on “wow big fish” and not “this is an IUCN Red List Critically Endangered species that is extremely physiologically fragile and often does not survive fishing practices like this”

I am not anti-fishing.

I am not anti- shark fishing.

But hammerheads in particular are species of significant conservation concern, and one of the worst candidates for “catch and release” of any known fish species.

And it’d be nice if media coverage *of hammerhead fishing* mentioned that

Only an administration intent on committing war crimes in the present and future would stoop to calling Wounded Knee a "battle" rather than what it truly was: a massacre of over 250 Lakotas, mainly women, children, and the elderly. 1/

This paper does a great job with a "It's a Wonderful Life" scenario about NIH, supposing the consequences of the bottom 40% of the funding NIH grants never existed.

tl:dr The world would lose a lot, but directly and indirectly
What if NIH had been 40% smaller?

By the way, before AI, google lens was kind of useful for stuff like this (i.e., finding the original source of an image and/or real articles about it). Now it's just AI slop and ads.
