I think its more than just social media though people completely lack basic comprehension and critical thinking skills which make them way more susceptible to group think and misinformation
One of the most alarming things about the rise of social media and the gutting of traditional media is seeing how so many people are vulnerable to conspiracy theories, and not even the believable kind, but the "Mickey Mouse lives in the sewer and kidnaps children" kind.

The literal only good thing that came from the CDC lifting the 10 day quarantine is the fact that the capitalist class showed how vulnerable they are to the working class not working. Get organized. Join a union. Talk to your coworkers. Get mad at the billionaires not your comrades
