For new folks, my whole deal is that I’m obsessively trying to advance the art of interactive storytelling & do new things with how we tell stories!

I talk a lot about agency, responsive systems, procedural narrative, AI ethics, creative leadership, burnout, etc. I also just babble. It’s 50/50.

it is insane to me that you could basically get two narrative designers who can basically solve any problem within scope constraints. it’s like having people parachute in to rescue whatever you need fixing far beyond what you thought you could get

If you hire me AND bruno, you could get two long-time collaborators who will make your material, whatever it is, *alarmingly* unhinged

yes. put us together in a box so we can make each other increasingly deranged

In all seriousness I am willing to do a lot of contortions in my life to not sit in traffic. I would rather walk/train for an hour than sit in traffic for 20 mins

How My Family Taught Me About Political Violence, a true story thread

When I was a kid we had a Nazi flag in our attic. It was huge and red with a swastika in the middle and on several occasions I asked a friend if they wanted to see a real Nazi flag and crept up the ladder to unfold it and stare.

Going to be so tired at work tomorrow but there are so many small musical flourishes I’m obsessed with and can’t stop listening.

I literally sent those same lines to the group chat!! 🤌💖

I’ve been gone awhile because things have been very hard at home. I find myself at an unfathomable point, and my heart is absolutely broken. If you’re able to donate and share, my gratitude is deep. I never wanted to get here. Thank you for your consideration and assistance. gofund.me/0b0592ad0

The all-cash deal values EA at $55 billion, a massive premium, as Saudi Arabia and others take it private.

Wilson will stay on as CEO for now and the deal still has to be approved. kotaku.com/ea-sale-saud...

Even though swapping A and B buttons is the first thing I do every time I get a new Nintendo console and I'm desperately grateful they eventually added that feature, I kind of love Nintendo's refusal to swap their A & B buttons as a matter of course.

They're like "fool, we invented A and B buttons"

If any single techbro pushing genAI had 1% of the incredible artists (incl writers, film-makers, game devs, etc) in their life that I do, they'd never ever put their talents and energy towards making machines that steal from them to spit out soulless garbage facsimiles of creativity.

@unraveledpress.com literally got me being shot — I'm crouched behind the van holding the back of my head where I'd already been hit. Then it pans to the right where the ICE is pointing right at us. I get hit in the face & you see the man who was with me rush past as he takes me to the medic
unraveledpress.com
ICE advanced again, started firing at photographers/press intentionally. Took a nasty lick to the face, unsure if pepper ball or rubber bullet.

Dr. Friedman’s mentoring advice (passed down from my mentors): while love often fuels the start of a project, stubbornness gets you through.

I keep thinking lately of the question my sister asked her future husband: “what are you going to do on the day you wake up & you don’t love me anymore?”
stcymsn.bsky.social
Yes! I was in the grocery store last weekend and ended up in 3! different 10+ min conversations with strangers and the whole time I kept thinking “this would NEVER happen in SF”
stcymsn.bsky.social
Yes. It is VERY difficult to strike up a conversation with strangers in the Bay Area in my experience
stcymsn.bsky.social
Readjusting to the small reverse-culture-shocks of returning from SF to Boston:
- finally starting to let go of my emotional support layers and trust that the weather is the weather and it will not randomly be 20° colder because I have traveled 1 mile towards water
- getting good at small talk again
stcymsn.bsky.social
Makes sense 🫂 For a while I was very loud about these things because it's easy for that work to become invisible.

I stopped because it was being misread as me being prescriptive rather than descriptive, which was the opposite of my intention. But I still think visibility on this stuff is important!

It's more like there's a delta away from the median that feels comfortable to stay within (for me) and a point past which it starts to feel uncomfortable.

For several years I intentionally wore pumps to GDC to make a point but ultimately energy is finite and that's not the hill I want to die on
stcymsn.bsky.social
Yeah I plan to talk about this in the post: I don't presume all women feel the way I do & I go through periods where clothes I naturally want to wear overlap with the uniform more closely and times when they don't.

It's also not as clean as "femme clothes feel out of place"--that's not exactly true
stcymsn.bsky.social
Yeah I guess it's cool a lot of men don't need a separate wardrobe; I definitely do. I just think of it as my work uniform.

In SF I could get away with wearing the uniform all the time, but moving back to Boston has reminded me how *me* I feel in clothes that feel too "soft" for a dev environment
stcymsn.bsky.social
I was just saying to friends that I dress down to go to work (and most game events).

I’m actually writing a post about hoodies as armor & the gamedev uniform (though I’ve prev written about how I bought new clothes & shoes at my first GDC in 2014 so that people on the floor would talk to me)

, indie.
So the next time I did government stuff, I put on my most punk outfit just to fit the part.

I found combining boots with the blazer does help with looking less intimidating for juniors. Gotta be a little punk.

It's funny how we do seem to have a dress code, it's just not an office one.

Are you or someone you know skipping GDC (or considering doing so) because of worries about coming to the US/San Francisco in the current environment?

If so, I want to hear from you for a piece. DM me here or kyle DOT orland AT arstechnica DOT com.
