The role of racism in the development of fascism is well known. Less widely known, but as important (I'd argue) is the role of sexism. Hegemonic masculinity, with its inherent misogyny and homophobia, has been central to the rise of every fascist movement.

Trump ran a very identity politics campaign in 2024, JD Vance is giving speeches going “it’s ok to be white,” Kamala Harris avoided identity politics, even dismissed prompts to bait her into it with “same old tired playbook, next question.” And yet.

By “identity politics,” a lot just mean identity.
i think a lot about how like the normie voter codes Kamala more radical than Bernie and/or Trump

I keep saying this but no one is connecting the dots. The war is to satisfy legal preconditions for mass removal *domestically* of Latinos (i.e., suddenly a lot of people are going to be “Venezuelan” for purposes of removal). This is 100% Stephen Miller…oil claim is to make grandpa go along
There is no national security logic that would impel the US to want to do regime change in Venezuela. It's simply not that important. I'm not even sure wag the dog is the right metaphor for what's happening here. Seems like an insane misallocation of US national security assets and attention.
Trump: "Venezuela is completely surrounded by the largest Armada ever assembled ... It will only get bigger, and the shock to them will be like nothing they have ever seen before — Until such time as they return to the USA all of the Oil, Land, and other Assets that they previously stole from us."

I saw somebody share this poll again recently, and it made me think some thoughts. I’m not looking to litigate Gaza or anybody’s stances on it; it more made me think about media critique and how that intersects with the standards to which we hold our own.

We don't allow parents to ignore seat belt laws because they don't believe in physics; we shouldn't allow them to ignore vaccination laws because they don't believe in biology.
“The vaccination has stuff we don’t trust,” said the father of the 6-year-old girl who died of measles. In March, Tom Bartlett wrote about his visit with a family confronting an unthinkable tragedy.

He's trying to create a physical legacy. The moment he's out of power, it has to be smashed to bits.

Today, I debunk Nick Shirley’s vicious viral video attacking Somalis in Minnesota. The one JD Vance suggests deserves a Pulitzer. The 42-min propaganda with zero evidence, that has captured MAGA media, and is being used to cover up the real issue entirely.

This is an important point. And as our information system has evolved over the past 10 years it has more obviously become a partisan press model. Not just websites and podcasts, but ownership of what were once mainstream/non-partisan news outlets. People consume propaganda without realizing it.
One of the most successful propaganda campaigns of our time is the right-wing claim that liberals dominate the media. The right has pushed this myth for decades on Fox and other outlets. You know about it because RIGHT-WING MEDIA HAVE A HUGE MEGAPHONE. My thread. 1/10 🧵

Immigrant-hating Stephen Miller talks about Americans being "first to harness the atom." But the first controlled, self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction was conducted by a team led by Italian immigrant Enrico Fermi, who didn't become a U.S. citizen until a year and a half later.

New College is a DeSantis pet project, a Potemkin Campus that must be made real at any cost. While the NY Times notes it is the most expensive in the state, it does not tell readers what an extraordinary outlier it is. Freedom isn’t free, and a right-wing campus makeover is very expensive it seems.

Problem is with impeachment power in a partisan Congress. It's a gun with no bullets; the idea that the electorate empowered a sovereign for four years, and it is anti-democratic to remove him, is so powerful (and so dumb) that you can never really crack his party and get the votes for conviction.

We did so because we developed Grandmothers, and domesticated Dogs.

That's enough. We've had enough people indulging in the "thrill of a little conservatism", as a treat. Of considering reactionary thought to be a salacious and taboo in a world descending into reactionary mania.
