Be *extra* careful if traveling westbound on the detour.

Drivers are not looking for westbound traffic on 28th and I know of at least one crash (last night, car/scooters) already since the detour went in.

Upcoming closure of a section of the Midtown Greenway between Bryant and 5th Ave from Oct 14 to 27. Detour is 28th Street.

Shared use paths (bikes & peds sharing space w/o separation) are great for low density & low traffic areas.

Lyndale Ave S is neither of those.

It would be a HUGE mistake to put a shared use path here.

For safety & accessibility we need bus lanes, wide sidewalks & protected bikelanes.

And wouldja look at that: the City of Minneapolis actually enforcing the rules on a block where there is basically always a motor vehicle parked in the bike lane. There must be an election going on or something.

Yeah, we don't really do real bollards for protecting people much in Minneapolis. Something about supposedly making snow removal difficult.

But there was also a lot of support from residents.
stephen.int42.org
There were concerns from residents about moving a local bus route two blocks off Bryant, which had been a transit corridor since the days of streetcars.
stephen.int42.org
There were a handful of very loud elderly nimby residents who wouldn't listen to anyone, as usual.
stephen.int42.org
Almost all opposition during the planning phase was the loss of on-street parking, mainly from business owners who don't live there and/or have off street parking. Most of the corridor's parking was underutilized.

I can't belive that I biked on this for more than a decade! Cars, busses and bikes forced into the same 30mph traffic lane on this old street car right of way.

This is what it use to look like.
Two-way view of Bryant Ave S in Minneapolis. Cars are parked along both sides, leaving two narrow travel lanes marked with a sharrow in one direction. The sidewalks are cracked, narrow, and right up against traffic. On the left is an apartment building with a fenced entry, and on the right are older houses and trees.

It's a full curb, 20mph speed limit, and low car traffic, but I am more comfortable on sections that have the boulevard between the bikeway and the street.

People act like getting kids places without a car is Herculean. I biked three (one not mine) to the Kingfield Farmers Market, 95% on bikeways. No car seats, no stress, just laughs. The challenge isn’t moving kids, it’s redesigning cities to work for people instead of cars. #StreetsForPeople
View from the front of a cargo bike riding on a new two-way protected bikeway. Ahead, three children, all wearing helmets, ride bikes — one in a yellow sweatshirt, one in black, and one in a patterned dress. A pedestrian walks on the sidewalk to the left. Apartment buildings line one side of the street, and parked cars line the other. Trees and bright morning sunlight frame the neighborhood scene.

Uptown / Lyn-Lake is one of the most “car-optional” neighborhoods in Minnesota. Walkable streets, good bike routes, and buses that run often enough to make life simple. Plus, it’s a real community — lots of folks out walking, biking, hanging at local businesses. You’ll feel connected quickly.

Yep, both my kids don’t like sidewalk riding, and the 5 yo has only been biking with pedals for a few months 🙃

Has any mayoral candidate mentioned getting MPD to follow basic traffic laws as part of their campaign?

Hi @npr.org! We worked late tonight putting together this handy pocket guide!

It doesn't address road design issues, but if we're going to educate road users, we should include drivers.

It's the size of a folded business card. Print it, fold it, put it in your wallet!
"How Do You Avoid Hitting People With Your Car" pocket guide. Instructs readers to Watch the Road and Slow Down. Further text humorously insists that watching the road and slowing down are indeed important.

Why people are dying:
-Speeding isn't well regulated
-People are driving impaired/distracted
-Vehicle size is dangerously bloated
-Roads are designed poorly
-Legal system has failed vulnerable road users
-Establishment tries to shift blame to victims

My tip to bikers & walkers—tell NPR to fuck off

Nothing like waiting at the bus stop with your kids while a flatbed truck blasts through a stop sign 4 feet away, going 10 mph over, then can’t even make the turn and has to back up in the intersection.

Yep, feels super safe for families. Totally fine. 🙄🚚 #SafeStreets #VisionZero
