Probably marking. Or thinking about marking at least…
I am trying to think what attacking Venezuela actually IS. The regime is unpleasant - yes - but bombing is not going to topple it. To gain access to oil, you need a considerable number of troops on the ground, and that will lead to American deaths, inevitably, which Trump will wish to avoid.

As I am recovering (still!) from a nasty bout of flu, I am off to bed. I wish anyone who sees this message a happy new year. May it bring you and yours hope and peace.

Remembering those who died on this day in 1981 in the Penlee Lifeboat disaster, especially the volunteer crew of the Solomon Browne, who set out in awful seas to rescue the crew of the Union Star. All hands of both ships were lost. In gratitude to those who work to save those in peril on the seas.

My dad abhors any negative comments about immigrants. Asked him recently why he’s so strong on it: ‘Because we’re always happy to take the rich and clever ones. Which means it’s not about disliking immigrants. It’s about disliking the poor and vulnerable. And that’s a bad human instinct.’
This is so disgusting.

Wrote the following as a reply to a post, but feel it is right to post here too: Stoppard is a huge loss - not afraid of being intelligent, and never patronising his audience, his writing was profound, warm, kind and humane. Arcadia is wonderful, but The Invention of Love is up there too.

To all those decrying migration and suggesting that it is universally a bad thing and that we need to keep our culture white and ‘pure’, may I humbly point out that the heroic conductor who stood up to the potentially murderous attack on the train was called Samir Zitouni - a name of Saudi origin.
