In today's newsletter, I take aim at that New York Times article which waxed nostalgic about the toxic and criminal world of Jeffrey Epstein's New York.

Sure, that's the takeaway here Last week's release of some of Jeffrey Epstein's emails remains in the headlines. With each day that passes, people digging through them uncover more awful and appalling examples of the palling around and favor-asking of rich and powerful men who have preyed on young women and girls. It's positively stomach-turning. It has caused those paying attention to ask big questions about how the monsters who walk among us could operate with such impunity for so long. Well, most of those paying attention. Some who have studied the Epstein emails have a different takeaway: nostalgia. Yesterday morning The New York Times published a story about how Epstein's sexual abuse ring was just another part of some long, lost good ol' days of New York's business, entertainment, and media elite. The headline and sub-hed reads, "Epstein Emails Reveal a Lost New York: The disgraced financier’s recently released documents are steeped in a clubby world that is all but gone." The nut graf reads like this is the stuff of misty water-colored memories: The emails are like a portal back to a lost Manhattan power scene. Mr. Epstein’s inbox was larded with boldface names — many of them now faded or forgotten — that once meant everything to status-obsessed New Yorkers. It was the world that Donald Trump came out of, and the one that Mr. Epstein had so effectively beguiled after having grown up in a middle-class household in Coney Island. As the emails stretch through the years, they show how that protected realm vanished into the mists of time, pulled under by the rising forces of the internet and the #MeToo movement. The story talks lovingly about the high-end restaurants the pedophiles in the emails frequented, the big parties these pedophiles attended, and the media interests and financial investments which occupied these pedophiles' days. At one point the story says, "[f]rom the vantage point of Mr. Epstein’s inbox, the revelations concerning the abusive behavior of men in power played out like a psychological thriller." It's all treated like entertainment or some celebrity drama, not a disgusting, life-destroying crime spree. This is how Margaret Mitchell wrote of the antebellum south in "Gone With the Wind." This is how Henry Hill talked about the pre-Lufthansa Heist days in the New York mob in "Goodfellas." It's a nostalgic glorification of a past that almost entirely refuses to acknowledge, let alone examine, that the past which is being glorified revolved around a horrible, dark, criminal degeneracy. In this case sex-trafficking, pedophilia and sexual abuse. I don't know how anyone with a conscience writes a story like this. I don't know how anyone in the very well-staffed editorial department allows it to hit the presses in this form. I don't know how they decide that this awful business should be covered like it's fodder for the society page rather than something picked up off the crime blotter. But it's probably worth noting that just last year the story's writer, Shawn McCreesh, spoke to journalism students at his alma mater, St. John's, and told them that journalism is great field because, “It gives you this all-access pass to interact with these people we would otherwise never come across.” He's clearly starstruck. So badly starstruck that he seems to forget why all these rich and famous people happen to be in the news this past week. Major media outlets have little to no interest in holding the wealthy and powerful accountable. Probably because major media outlets these days are dominated by the wealthy and the powerful and the people who want nothing more than to be near them.
