Tory Conference debate on free speech. You see? Sometimes being "cancelled" is a mercy.

I am once again asking us all to recognize that the Luddites were not anti-technology but anti-exploitation. If they were around today they would have joined you in a call for technology that serves everyone’s, not just the bosses.

You *are* a Luddite Bernie, and you should be proud to be one

Can AI and robotics help us in many ways? I am not a Luddite — I believe they can.

But we must make sure these new technologies benefit all of us, not just a handful of billionaires.

I hope you'll take a few minutes to read my op-ed in Fox News. Let’s start the debate.
SEN SANDERS: AI must benefit everyone, not just a handful of billionaires
Billionaires like Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos invest billions in AI and robotics that could eliminate millions of jobs while increasing corporate profits at workers' expense.

Today I got told off by a new computational system at work as I tried to book a meeting room more than 23 days in advance and that is AGAINST POLICY even tho I have meetings in my diary booked years ahead, thus creating more work for me at a time we are all having to do “more with less”. K Thanks 👍

October is National Co-op Month AND 2025 is the UN "International Year of Cooperatives"!

Since Wraith Games is a worker co-op, we figured the best way to celebrate would be to share some info about co-ops and why they're rad!

Ya'll ready for a thread?

You Knew this was Coming.

The Treasury Department is developing a commemorative coin, of President Trump, for the nation’s 250th birthday. An 1866 act established that only deceased people could appear on U.S. currency.

Macron remarks are notable- some quotes: "We have been incredibly naive in entrusting our democratic space to social networks that are controlled either by large American entrepreneurs or large Chinese companies, whose interests are not at all the survival or proper functioning of our democracies."

The situation with Blackboard - now its owner is bankrupt and it's coming under new private equity ownership and control - is serious enough the UK agency for HE tech is advising all affected universities to seek assurances regarding data security inspiringlearning.jiscinvolve.org/wp/2025/10/s...

All digital services must work well on sub-par connections, with sub-par devices, and make sense to "sub-par" users. For key individual-facing services a functional non-digital alternative must be retained. (Nothing original in any of this.)

Very good stuff from Sadiq Khan at the Labour Irish society event. He said there are two reasons he loves coming to Labour Conference.

“One is the reception at the Labour Party Irish Society reception.

“The second is to get away from all the Sharia Law in London”

So, something must be done about something else. This is something etc....

I could equally say, how might it be used by a racist Reform govt.? (looks across the Atlantic).

The onus is on proponents to show how their solution addresses it and risks at least mitigated.
steve-walker.bsky.social
The onus, surely, is on the advocates to demonstrate a) how it will achieve their objectives, and b) that it can do so without major negative effects.

So no, I don't think my logic is more sweeping. I've seen these arguments plenty of times from 'innovators'.

Something must be done!

This is something. We must do it!

Anyone who opposes us is an enemy of innovation/change resister/Luddite!

Could we have a standing petition that just says:

"NO to anything new, despite not having any detail.

IT IS WOKE/IT WILL HERALD FASCISM/PALANTIR WILL STEAL MY BRAINWAVES/IT IS MARXISM/IT IS AI-ADJASCENT [delete as appropriate].

But mainly because WE ARE BRITISH and didn't think of it first."

Ok. They’ve pissed me off.

I’m back to tell you 3 things about ID cards:

1. Migrants ALREADY HAVE biometric ID cards & govts have been trying to digitise them for years w repeated fuckups & failures causing complete chaos - they don’t work, you do not want that system for you.

So.

Immediately after discussing the seriousness of the JLR cyber attack, Liam Byrne moves smoothly on to why it's so important to put everyone's digital ID in a single place to access public services.
