One lesson I'm starting to learn from the ongoing chaos is that US conservatives are in fact willing to accept higher prices but only in the service of a rich man's ego, not if it helps anyone else or God forbid the planet

The head of our country’s government is in the early stages of consolidating total power. We must of course reject this, but that is not enough. We have to respond by creating a different and better kind of American politics than we have seen before.

Was not expecting to see something like this from NPR, but I guess terror and intimidation are the new normal for working in government. I guess it makes morbid sense that the party that wants us to fear the government so they can shrink it are actively making it scarier to all.
There’s just so much shady shit in this story, but this really sticks out. Folks in NLRB’s IT unit were so freaked out by what they saw DOGE doing that they wanted to notify the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Then this happened:

If anyone was wondering why universities are often targets of people consolidating power, see their historical track record of keeping critical thinking alive in times of oppression. If only we had such bold leadership in the current rise of authoritarianism: www.nytimes.com/2025/04/14/o...

Imagine a 2% wealth tax that increases the stability of the middle class, upgrades infrastructure, and underwrites a new generation of high tech manufacturing facilities.

Or if the wealthy investors refuse you could tax trade, which will only cost investors *checks news* ~9% and counting.

With names being rebranded and reinvented at the speed of skeets, this article points out the distraction tactic of vilifying DEI. Those in power have done this for decades to other causes to move the conversation away from their role in the unjust systems we live under.

It’s an attack on labor. But he can frame it as something else.

Your April Fools' Day reminder that trickle-down economics is the greatest trick of all. It's nothing more than a cruel hoax designed to enrich corporations and the super-rich at your expense. Don't fall for it.

My grandfather's family fled Mussolini's rise to America. Would be a shame if they only secured 2 generations of freedom and opportunity for the trouble
This letter appeared in the Bloomsburg PA Press Enterprise this morning. I am assured the writer is who he purports to be, an Air Force veteran.

This whole administration is an exercise in obviously illegal, but will anyone be able to make it stick. Last time there was at least a veneer of propriety from the executive. This time it seems like being technically legal is a plus not a requirement
“Declaring ‘I’m the king’ is not sufficient grounds for reversing” [NYC’s Congestion] program, said Robert L. Glicksman, a professor of environmental and administrative law at George Washington University Law School.

The president made his power to shut down the tolling system sound absolute. But legal experts say the law may not be in his favor.

When national disasters pile up and our economy is less competitive than it's been in decades, I want a straight line drawn to the short sighted and vindictive cuts to federal personnel and services.

While there is plenty to improve in the public sector, nuance is a requirement not a luxury.

I’m seeing an awful lot of posts from people on Bluesky responding to despairing scientists with the words “please keep going, the world needs you”.

Scientists cannot keep going if we can’t keep a roof over our heads and our mouths fed.

Lord knows I’m not a constitutional scholar not even a lawyer (and I’ve yet to check in with @kateshaw.bsky.social) but a legal regime in which “you can do crimes if you’re buddies with the president or praise him publicly” is *on its face* a violation the equal protection of the laws.

This is insane. There are lots of scientists in the US who are on “soft money”, which means that without government grants, they’re out of jobs. This is how you destroy the best research and development in the world.
I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service.

“Pausing” grants means people don’t eat.
White House pauses all federal grants, sparking confusion
The Trump administration has put a hold on all federal financial grants and loans, affecting tens of billions of dollars in payments.
