You know how Americans are surprised to learn that gun deaths are rare in most other countries, pedestrian-centered cities are normal, or everybody else uses metric? That, but discovering that the rest of the world moved to EVs.
It's funny how us parochial Americans generally seem to perceive that the EV revolution is stalling or reversing when in fact it's accelerating rapidly worldwide. 25% of cars sold globally in 2025 were EVs!

It's mostly just the US that's being left behind

In any case, if you don't start your discussion of "trust" in the media by understanding the right's well-planned, well-funded, methodical effort to destroy that trust, you're a sucker playing right into their hands.

Ironically, Bari Weiss' version of "rebuilding trust" - making the news way more conservative and credulous toward Trump - would rebuild trust among the right. Once the big news orgs are completely captured by far-right oligarchs, they'll trust the news again! They just won't be doing journalism.

The right spent decades screaming "Everything the mainstream media says is a lie, don't trust them!" then even gullible well-intentioned journalists ask "How can we rebuild trust?" and they think solid reporting will do the trick. That completely misunderstands what brought us to this point.
Bari Weiss just sent this Christmas Eve email to the CBS News staff about "building trust," which includes her tripling down on spiking the CECOT piece "to make sure it's comprehensive and fair."

One CBS staffer tells me: "She really has no idea how insulting she comes across."

Sooner or later and probably sooner than later, the regime’s racist policy of snatch, grab, and deport is going to impact every Americans food supply. One has to wonder if that’s the goal!

The people that were working on farms aren’t the problem! The immigration policy is broken!

And yet if you surveyed the general public, you'd find that most people think the country is more dangerous than ever.
I count 10 cities in 2025 that are on track to have the fewest murders since at least 1970. Newark is on pace to have the fewest murders since 1956 (though only have data through Oct this year) and San Francisco is on pace to have the fewest murders since 1942.
