Rents in Spokane are down 12% as a result of pro-housing legislation, like removing parking minimums, incentivizing housing on former parking lots, and upzoning all residential parcels.

Rent prices are falling fast in America’s most pro-housing cities
Rental prices in some of the country's largest cities are falling—some by almost 45 percent, according to new data.

Every news headline should just be "SBA survey shows that homeless people exist and we need more affordable housing and funding for support services."
Recently, you may have seen headlines (or RANGE reporter @merrywanderer.bsky.social's BSKY thread) about a recent study conducted in Spokane by the Spokane Business Association that found 50.2% of unhoused people in Spokane moved here after becoming homeless. We took a long, hard look at that study:

These are the Congressional Budget Office charts every Senator can see as they vote for the "One Beautiful Bill" next week.

Bombing Iran right as the Senate is about to vote on a massive budget reconciliation bill to find the military seems sus.

The bill would raise US debt by $5 trillion, spend a $1 trillion+ per year on military and defense alone, while gutting healthcare and social services.

Spokane be safe tomorrow.

Pride and No Kings on the same day means there are lots of feds and leos looking for justifications to do stupid things and escalate. Don't give them one.

Make them question which side of the crowd they're standing on.

I see it. I have lived it. 83 years ago, the U.S. government turned upon a group of its own citizens and residents and sent them to internment camps without due process. I was there among them. American fascism is back. It is here. It is now.

What are countries like Côte d'Ivoire supposed to do? 90% of their exports to the U.S. are cocoa beans and natural rubber - can you build those behind the tariff wall?

No.

My latest for @piie.com on the disaster these #tariffs may mean for many resource-dependent developing economies.
The new tariffs do not mirror tariffs developing countries impose on the US, nor account for different economic conditions & fiscal realities shaping tariff regimes in poorer countries—& ignore basic realities of institutional capacity, resource endowment, & geography. By @cullenhendrix.bsky.social:
Trump's April 2 tariff spree could cripple developing economies
President Donald Trump presented his new tariffs on April 2 as a pragmatic, "reciprocal" trade policy intended to balance trade between the US and its trading partners. But the tariffs on imports from...

Who needs bollards. What if we just put really big rocks in the right lane?
“The U.S. Department of Transportation will look ’less favorably’ on safety projects that reduce lane capacity for vehicles, according to the agency's newly issued grant criteria—raising alarm among advocates for safe street design, especially in dense urban environments with little space to spare.”

The problem with strong-arm negotiations is that even when they "work", they only have one willing party. And the other will always try to undermine it.

Mutually beneficial agreements are much more work, and can't use hostage-style tactics, but overwhelmingly generate better outcomes.

I'm suspecting all the current shinanigans are setting us up for another USS Maine style incident to justify military action and a land grab.

All the other states get the cool young and hip claims like "First African American senator from New Jersey".

But Washington State definitely has the 2 best old white ladies in the Senate.

The most infuriating part of the current WA budget debate is the realization you can literally solve everything by just barely taxing the 0.05% richest people by 1%.

That is pretty much the "radical" Democrat tax plan.

You know the @wadems.org have a messaging problem when I found out about their amazingly progressive revenue plan from the Washington State House Republicans. Literally just say #taxtherich and you will get the support.
