Extremely relevant numbers! (And this is *low traffic* by modern standards.)

an interesting note re: scaling image moderation. in the past 24 hours:

at least 500 thousand images in posts (not considering # of images, just if an image was in the post)
86 thousand avatars
500 thousand url thumbnails
58 thousand videos.

that's a lot to moderate!

Omg the issues are obvious in the trailer itself.

Just to remind you that the second graphic novel dedicated to the creation of Star Wars has just been released in France. My review is coming and, spoiler, it will be good.

The 1st book having been translated into 18 languages, you'll probably all have the opportunity to read the second one later.

With all the caveats about anonymous posters, this is still staggering, a revelation of what a sliver we see reported across mainstream & alt media combined; and this itself is obviously just a sliver. www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/...

Gonna be thinking about this lede for a minute.
(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.

You'll meet her getting punished by her boss for her failure to stop you. Which is a very interesting situation for introducing this character as a potential party member!

There’s a lot in here that deserves a pull quote, but this is the most egregious. I need people to recognize the gravity of the situation here in Chicago;

"The ones that are getting out are coming home to no home," Watson said.
According to her, after the raid occurred, building management stole or threw out residents belongings, including visas and important documents.

ICIRR is still trying to determine the identities of all the people detained in the raid. Castro said that the organization usually can do that by following up with family members or loved ones. "In this instance, there was nobody left to work with," she said. The only detainee name they're sure of is that of a person who passed their Venezuelan passport to a neighbor as they were being taken away.

Pretty sure that if they built 737s designed to fly for years without any heavy maintenance, the safety margin would be different too.

i have met a number of pigs, including pigs i later went on to eat (we have small farmers in our family) and quite frankly, getting to know pigs has made me feel even less bad about eating them

they would 100% eat us if given the chance

However I still expect these experiments to fail because salt water is a very nasty environment for any equipment, so maintenance costs may outweight the reduction in electricity consumption.
stormancer.com
Urban heat islands are more relevant, but they appear because air conducts heat badly, so without wind, it tends to accumulate. Water behaves differently (that's why water cooling is far more effective and why this underwater datacenter concept appears regularly) and dissipates heat much better.
stormancer.com
The physics behind that is pretty interesting, but without the greenhouse effect the earth would be covered in ice. So you need just enough greenhouse gazes in the atmosphere to get the avg temp we want. Too much means too hot, and that's our problem.
stormancer.com
The greenhouse effect is something completely different, it's caused by specific gazes (incl. CO2) absorbing some part of the light reflected by the earth instead of letting the energy escape into space (like in a real greenhouse the heat is provided by the sun)
stormancer.com
However the problem is that salted water does not exactly play well with electronics. Maintenance is another issue.
stormancer.com
There is a problem of relative scales in this proposal. Nobody serious is afraid datacenters are heating the atmosphere. They can't meaningfully heat the oceans neither. Putting them underwater is interesting because this way you don't need to spend electricity on active cooling.
