Something like this? Silde a bolt from a hinge-panel into the top, attach the panel, have 2 or 3 swinging panels that latch more like a garden gate & swing off the sides? Not impermanent, but would just need a few screws into wall/bannister.

The weather heard me complaining about lack of snow, so dumped about 10cm on my folks' on the day I came up. Only the last 30km or so were poor driving, but the scenery is great. (And no, I didn't think to grab my skis 🥺)
