Listen, I may not be a very good one, but I am still a geologist and, what's more important, a goblin.

Is there anybody in Alabama looking for a quest? I'm seeing some soil centipedes on iNat that may be a species I would LOVE to have a specimen of, and has only been reported a few times. 100+ legs, reported from Tuscaloosa and now maybe Fort Payne & Guntersville. www.inaturalist.org/observations...

In late 2020 a Chinese man called Guan Heng travelled to Xinjiang with our BuzzFeed map of detention facilities to provide ground truth for our work - he provided the first corroborating evidence for many sites.

He escaped to the US - then ICE detained him.

Heng Guan is awaiting an immigration hearing on Monday that could lead to his removal from the U.S. and ultimately land him back in China, according to his lawyer and a New York-based activist group.

This is fucking grim. Somebody invented a white guy, an "IT professional" named Edward Crabtree, who stopped the Bondi shooting and spread it all over the internet, which was picked up by AI agents and slop aggregation sites.

The real hero is a fruit stand owner named Ahmed el Ahmed.

I am a professional hydrologist and I saw so many obviously fake flood videos posted. Flood the zone with shit so no one will know what is true anymore strategy
Folks on Washington state community Facebook groups are arguing about whether images of local flood damage are real or not. Generative AI is making it so much harder for people to get the reliable information they need to make decisions during disasters.

In the same incident, an ICE agent pepper sprayed a baby.
(Link to post by a state representative)
One of our Shakopee observers witnessed ICE pepper spray a baby today in Chanhassen.

(Yes. You read that right.)

The agent knew the baby was there. ICE does not make our communities safer. End Operation Metro Surge NOW!

If you wanna learn more about immune amnesia this is a good primer from the American Society for Microbiology.

Measles binds to your immune system’s memory cells and infects them, effectively erasing their database. It then produces all new memory cells - that contain info ONLY for measles.
Measles and Immune Amnesia | ASM.org
Measles is much more serious than a rash and fever: it also causes immune amnesia and leaves patients especially vulnerable to secondary infection.

This was a dumb thing to do, but the article gets a lot wrong.

This was not a "device" in the nuclear weapons sense of an explosive without a delivery vehicle. It was not an explosive at all.

I'll write a post. #nukesky

Looking for an *L.A. based* artist who (against all odds) has time for a poster gig before the end of the year.

It's for a science + art event.

We can offer $500 for the gig.

Dreadfully sorry about the timeline. Link a portfolio if you're interested, I'll delete this post when we found someone.

Trump says he loves coal miners. His administration is killing them.

A life-saving silica exposure rule meant to curb the black lung crisis in Appalachia is now effectively dead.
