Currently reading: Sink or Swim, by @susannahfisher.bsky.social - very good so far, and a hardback book without a dust cover is a classy object, no?

”According to the ERA5 dataset of the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S)*, Europe is the fastest-warming continent and has warmed by approximately 0.53°C per decade since the mid-1990s, and the Arctic is warming even faster—around 0.69°C per decade.”

Why are Europe and the Arctic heating up faster than the rest of the world?
As the planet continues to warm, not all regions are heating up at the same pace.  Over the last thirty years, the global average temperature has increased by around 0.26°C per decade. But in Europe a...

Well, here's some good news to start the weekend. Negotiating a treaty is one thing, but the work only starts once it's ratified and it looks as though the High Seas Treaty (aka BBNJ) will soon be up and running. This provides structure & standards & is a big step in protecting our ocean. 🎉🎉🌊
Historic High Seas Treaty is a "turning point for humanity" - Oceanographic
An historic treaty to protect the marine life and ecosystems of the high seas, the High Seas Treaty, will come into force in 120 days.

One of the strongest, clearest increases in likelihood & intensity, attributable to climate change, I've seen in a complex index like fire weather - the more intense & frequent events in Greece & Türkiye are already outpacing efforts to adapt.

Over breakfast, I began to read 'Sink or Swim' - the excellent new book by @susannahfisher.bsky.social. I only read the prologue but I'm so excited. It's unpicking lots of the challenging questions that are at the heart of transformational adaptation, and the tradeoffs with incremental approaches.

More retreats will happen on our march to 2°C

“In the next few weeks, the last 71 residents will load their possessions onto boats to move to Mertarvik. They will become one of the first Alaska Native villages to complete a large-scale relocation because of climate change”
Climate change destroyed an Alaska village. Its residents are starting over in a new town
Erosion and melting permafrost have just about destroyed the Alaska village of Newtok. About 70 feet of land has been disappearing each year, and all that remains are some dilapidated and largely abandoned gray homes scraped bare of paint by salty winds of Bering Sea storms.

Vast numbers of people live in areas that are highly vulnerable to #heatwaves.

Everything pictured here is at long term heating of ~1.5°C - and we are firmly on track to cross 2°C.

Large scale heat adaptation is called for!

Important point by @susannahfisher.bsky.social in her new book:

"If I had been writing this book a few years ago I might have talked more about the highest-emission scenarios and painted a picture of an apocalyptic desert world of 4C or 5C.. The good news is, that is now not very likely" #optimism
