I didn't finish it in time, but here's a bit of what I've been working on for day 2: magic (1/3) #sylvixweek #wip

Sylvain looks up from where he’s been halfheartedly fooling around on his phone when the bell above the door jingles. He spares a glance at his latest uninspiring Tinder match, some shapeshifter with a cute smile but an extremely unimaginative bio. Eh. He swipes right anyway, before swiftly locking his phone and slipping it into his pocket.

Two people stumble into Sylvain’s small—sorry, ”charmingly intimate”—storefront. A tiny, adorable redhead is resolutely shoving a grumpy-looking man through the door frame.

The man is clearly fit in that slim and wiry way Sylvain may be slightly weak for, and the girl couldn’t weigh more than a hundred pounds soaking wet, but he seems utterly resigned to allowing her to cheerfully manhandle him anyway. Something about it reminds Sylvain of this one video he saw of a little girl aggressively cuddling a clearly miserable cat. It had this thousand yard stare, like it fully understood and accepted the futility of struggling against such intense, unavoidable love. Sylvain snorts, just a little.

The man dodges away from her hands once she’s forced him all the way inside, which almost causes her to over balance and fall flat on her face. The man’s eyes widen and he darts forward to steady her. “Be careful for once, Annette,“ he snaps in an utterly toothless way. She just laughs, reaching up to affectionately poke him in the cheek. The man’s hair is long, pulled back in a messy bun. Sylvain idly wonders what it might look like down.

At this point, the girl—Annette?—seems to remember that Sylvain is there and, yes, absolutely saw all of that. She turns toward him, a little flushed. It doesn’t dim her megawatt smile at all.

“Hello,” she chirps, confidently approaching the counter. The man hangs back, resolutely looking anywhere but at Sylvain. They’re a cute couple, and something inside of him pangs distantly. He hopes this doesn’t go the way he expects it to.

“Welcome in, what can I do for you today?” Sylvain asks, as though people ever come in for more than one, very specific thing.

The truth is that, while Sylvain is a competent alchemist and potion-maker with a broad range of abilities, there’s really only one reason people seek him out nowadays. Sylvain’s taken advantage of it, of course, because he’s nothing if not good at seizing an opportunity to market himself, especially in the wake of his messy disinheritance. Still, it’s always felt a little cheap.

He wonders what all of those years of study and apprenticeships were for, when the thing that actually pays his bills is the stupid, borderline useless gift he just happened to be born with.

“Is—is it true? That you can do Fate magic?” The girl blurts out, almost vibrating in excitement.

Sylvain feels his smile slide a little closer to sincere in the face of her obvious enthusiasm, even though it’s about fifteen minutes to closing and his favorite drama comes on in half an hour. “Yep! That’s what they tell me, anyway,” he quips, absently scratching the back of his neck. “It’s just the one thing, though.”

The man behind her scoffs, but says nothing. Sylvain doesn’t take it personally. It’s not like you can find someone who does Fate magic on every corner—it’s notoriously rare and finicky, and there’s no shortage of scammers ready to take advantage of the lonely and desperate in search of true love. But while Sylvain’s gift may be... niche, to say the least, it’s definitely the real deal.

“That’s amazing, though! I can’t do anything that cool,” she exclaims, palms clasped to her chest. Sylvain isn’t sure he quite believes that when he feels the compliment shiver down his spine like a physical thing. There’s something there, but it takes a second for him to place the feeling. Ah, he thinks, Empathic Voice.

“Can you do it for me?” She asks, jarring Sylvain out of his thoughts. Her eyes are wide and bright and sincere. Those eyes are weapons of mass destruction; Sylvain suddenly feels like he understands the guy still lurking behind her a little better.

During the night after a BDSM session, Sylvain cannot sleep, plagued with guilt and a heavy heart. Felix is there to comfort and reassure him.

There is no roll of Felix's eyes when the guilt is mentioned. This is far from the first time Sylvain has felt it over their relationship, and it likely won't be the last. Still, Felix is patient. He knows it's one of those insecurities—doubts—that buries so deep, there might always be a fragment of it waiting beneath the surface and comes to life once in a while. He has his own.

Felix takes hold of Sylvain’s hand. His thumb caresses the back of it. “You don’t have to be guilty. Not if I consent and want it.”

“I know. It’s just,” Sylvain laughs, almost awkward, as though trauma is something that requires it. “You know how it goes by now.”
