Pink salmon, native to the North Pacific, are rapidly invading Nordic waters. Since 2017, numbers have surged 50x, especially in Norway. Their impact on ecosystems remains unclear due to limited research and management plans #fish #invasive

Bottom trawling, dragging a heavy net across the seafloor, has been compared to burning down a forest to catch rabbits.

Sweden starting to ban this in sensitive habitats is my #EarthOptimism #OceanOptimism for today.

(I’m not anti-trawl but there are some places we shouldn’t do it)
Sweden sets an example for EU countries with first steps to ban bottom trawling in marine protected areas

Great work by Karen Dunmall explaining our new paper on Pink salmon and range expansion, selected by ICES Journal of Marine Science as their Editor's Choice this week. Liking the video explainer that accompanies these papers.

Pink salmon is the smallest Pacific salmon species (the genus Oncorhynchus) found in North America, often weighing <5 lb (2.2 kg).

“Oncorhynchus” comes from the Greek onkos ("hook") + rynchos ("nose"), in reference to the hooked jaws males typically develop in the spawning season #25DaysofFishmas

Sharing this photo of a native oyster bed in one of our survey sites here for the first time. This was my coelacanth moment, especially as many deny these oyster habitats even exist. Same as eels, Ostrea edulis (the species and the habitat) are threatened and yet we keep managing them as a fishery.

Exotic European gudgeon is replacing Italian gudgeon in Italian streams and rivers. We tested interspecific differences in the lab. The smaller Italian gudgeon displayed lower maximum swimming speed and substantially higher sympatric mortality. Recent paper here: www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....
