Widowed and nonbinary. I talk a lot about Star Trek, Ohio, cats, dinosaurs, and whatever I’m watching on TV. (They/Them)

Hi new followers, here’s what you’re in for:

Weird bits of late-20th century nonsense from Columbus, Ohio (a city that’s as much a sitcom town as Springfield or Pawnee).
A fair amount of Star Trek talk.
Rambling about what I’m reading/watching/playing.
I write and post a poem every day.
Cat photos.
A March 1997 issue of Columbus Monthly with the title “Columbus People and Their Cats (or Columbus Cats and their People).” Ignoring the film I fade out
one daydream overlaps another—

A man walks in to the saloon.

We're lost within a game store
outside Cleveland, a labyrinth
of shelves that felt unreal
even in the moment.

I think a fight just broke out.

Bare trees shudder
through small windows
and I wonder if clerks
watch the sky when
no one else is here. A photo of the alley at sunset. Half-bare trees and garages in silhouette. Bits of light reflect of the top of trash cans and power lines. An orange cat snoozing on a blanket made of comic strips.

I somehow missed this entire thread!
I can’t even blame an algorithm.

See, I don’t even take my wallet out of my pocket when I’m home (thanks, brain), so that never occurs to me.

I never do it either. I did in NYC when riding the subway, but as soon as I got back to Columbus I forgot that was an option.

I hadn’t heard that. Hollywood and money can make for weird politics, so I’m not going to rule it out, but any time I hear of her is as the leader of SAG.

Every day I feel more vindicated about Mallory Keaton being my favorite character on Family Ties.

Author and filmmaker Justine Bateman on generative AI
"They're trying to convince people they can't do the things they've been doing easily for years - to write emails, to write a presentation. Your daughter wants you to make up a bedtime story about puppies - to write that for you." We will get to the point, she says with a grim laugh, "that you will essentially become just a skin bag of organs and bones, nothing else. You won't know anything and you will be told repeatedly that you can't do it, which is the opposite of what life has to offer. Capitulating all kinds of decisions like where to go on vacation, what to wear today, who to date, what to eat.
People are already doing this. You won't have to process grief, because you'll have uploaded photos and voice messages from your mother who just died, and then she can talk to you via AI video call every day. One of the ways it's going to destroy humans, long before there's a nuclear disaster, is going to be the emotional hollowing-out of people." - author and filmmaker Justine Bateman from a piece by Emine Saner for the Guardian

Yes! And I think this also hits on my stubborn streak of not wanting to change just so other people won't make assumptions about me. I'd just like to never hear "sir" again.

(It would be nice if I wasn't trying to navigate this in the midst of a regressive backlash aiming to make gender MORE rigid)

No line at the Franklin County early voting center. Go get yourself a sticker!

(Even though they’re not as good as the old “I [Ohio] Voting” design.)

Hah. Possibly another good reason to never sort it at least.

Ugh. I’m sorry.
I know this feeling. Or at least a closely connected feeling*. It sucks and you shouldn’t have to be chill about it.

*(In my case, frustrated at being seen as Boy, unaware of any type of presentation that will let me just opt out of gender entirely.)

Peter Fonda saw Pablo Picasso paint. I know this because he told me when we were in a Thomas the Tank Engine movie together.

Yes, it’s as surreal as it sounds.

Same here. On all accounts. It also saved me when I was trapped in the airport over the summer.
