Covid causes brain damage.

Edit: Covid causes serious long term brain damage, and here's a whole lot more data

"COVID-19 infection was associated with a 58% increased risk of all-cause dementia and a 105% increased risk of Vascular Dementia"

Attended a conference yesterday, and one of the speakers spent his whole talk airing his personal grievances about other scientists who he felt had wronged him throughout his career. Made me want to crawl out of my skin.

Very good point! I didn’t check the papers that were cited
talnuriel.bsky.social
They do cite a bunch of animal studies showing that acetaminophen (or its metabolites) can negatively impact brain development in mice, and they cite some proposed mechanisms (oxidative stress, prostaglandin or endocannabinoid system effects, endocrine system disruption).

Wonderful news. A salutary reminder of the absolute benefits of scientific progress, and the absolute evil of conspiracist bollocks.

I really hope that one day we’ll get to the point of being able to communicate science like this effectively w the public. What happened in this case definitely wasn’t that.
talnuriel.bsky.social
I think Trump and RFK Jr used this more to score political points and to meet RFK Jr’s arbitrary September deadline, as opposed to for the public good, but it’s important to understand the science behind it nonetheless and not to just argue against it because of politics.

They conclude by saying “While this association warrants caution, untreated maternal fever and pain pose risks such as neural tube defects and preterm birth, necessitating a balanced approach. We recommend judicious acetaminophen use…rather than a broad limitation.”

Can someone who knows this stuff better than I do tell me if Trump’s new $100K H1-B rule applies to non-profits/Universities? I’m assuming no, but probably shouldn’t be assuming anything reasonable anymore.

I don’t know if it’s overall a good thing or a bad thing for science, but I have to say…the papers I review now are a hell of a lot clearer and easier to read than they were before chatGPT was invented. Which honestly, I don’t mind.

It will never not annoy me that the first Republican government to take a real interest in changing the way science is done were the misinformation, burn it all down Republicans, and not the let's remove government regulations to increase productivity Republicans.

Are you interested in the estimated #prevalence of #dementia in Europe? 🇪🇺
The @alzheimereurope.bsky.social website just got an upgrade including interactive graphics, visualising the projections by country: www.alzheimer-europe.org/dementia/pre...
ine chart titled 'Country estimates of people living with dementia (including projections for 2025 & 2050)' showing data for Luxembourg. The x-axis shows age groups (30–59, 60–64, 65–69, 70–74, 75–79, 80–84, 85–89, 90+). The y-axis shows number of people (0–5,000). Three lines represent years: 2018 (blue), 2025 (orange), 2050 (green). Across all age groups, projected numbers rise sharply by 2050, especially from age 70 upwards, peaking around 5,000 in the 90+ group. Source: Dementia in Europe Yearbook 2019.
