Such a fun blend of incredible prescience (video phone calling, wireless phones, etc.) and oddly static bits (the bell-shaped telephone microphones). Perfect fodder for a pulp rocketship adventure.

I'd probably end up paying it back in taxes, because my regular income is high enough.

No complaints, though. It would make lots of people around me more secure, both friends and strangers.
Honest question: If everyone got Universal Basic Income, no strings attached, what would YOU do with it?

I've always liked Moholo-Nagy. I would love to find a contemporary (affordable) Ariat in the same vein.

Now this is surprising to me.

I must sit in some weird crossover territory. I've read almost all of Cherryh's SF and am somehow also medium deep into Brit SF (Banks, Ken Macleod, Stross, etc.) I thought this was more common, but I guess not?
By that point, though, the heavy lifting of the Radch was already done. And to date, I have only read CP and the Hydrogen Sonata.

By the same token, people who were immersed in Banks' work almost never read CJ Cherryh, because her work wasn't widely available in the UK.

Watching Slow Horses, season 5, finally.

So we're getting "TikTok with Chinese characteristics."

It's like this administration is utterly incapable of understanding what words mean to anyone else. For China, "with Chinese characteristics" basically means "the CCP is the final authority," as in "capitalism with Chinese characteristics."

So, this is quite the useful reminder, not just as we approach books but in other parts of our lives as well.

Other people can do things differently without being wrong. And even when they actually are wrong, sometimes the right course is just to let it go unless it actually hurts the results.
To that, I did not reply.

Anyway, I can't help thinking that going through life burdened with Complete Knowledge of Correctness, with an added Duty to Enforce Correctness must be kind of stressful and not conducive to joy.

I just finished watching the most recent episode of Foundation. I get the sense that someone in the writers room has read A Memory Called Empire. The character names Songbird-17 and Oceanglass-49 seem like definite nods to Teixcalaan names like Three Seagrass.

Jason Isbell's "If We Were Vampires" hit me hard after my cancer diagnosis. I'm fine now, but damn...

It′s knowing that this can′t go on forever
Likely, one of us will have to spend some days alone
Maybe we'll get 40 years together
But one day, I′ll be gone or one day, you'll be gone
