A ream of norms are being shattered daily, but as a tech expert this one really shocks me. For a generation CSAM has been *THE* flaming red line for a tech platform. If they spent money on ANYTHING, it was moderating it miles away. To even have the whiff of it was a Federal kiss of death. Now? 🤷‍♂️
I want to highlight this important story by my friends @nbcnews.com - www.nbcnews.com/tech/interne... "The Internet Watch Foundation said it found topless images of girls that dark web forum users attributed to xAI’s Grok Imagine." <-- the AI generated CSAM / NCII immediately escapes containment
Dark web users cite Grok as tool for making 'criminal imagery' of kids, U.K. watchdog says

Been working on this one for a while — it's a little bit of history of a key foundation of internet technology, and a little bit of an explainer about how people _actually_ invent things. This is the amazing (true!) story of how Markdown took over the world. www.anildash.com/2026/01/09/h...

I'm glad to see this pressure on Google and Apple. If any other company was running an active CSAM generator in public you better believe it would have been removed from their app stores by now www.wired.com/story/x-grok...
Why Are Grok and X Still Available in App Stores?
Elon Musk’s chatbot has been used to generate thousands of sexualized images of adults and apparent minors. Apple and Google have removed other “nudify” apps—but continue to host X and Grok.

my 75yo mother told me last night that she’s planning to delete Instagram and Facebook because she’s sick of not being able to tell what’s AI and what’s not, and I genuinely don’t think tech companies have reckoned with this kind of move as an actual possibility

This is insane. People at X should face charges for this nonsense

It should be journalistic malpractice to quote an AI chatbot instead of the company’s spokesperson when the chatbot is shown to have product flaws due to cutting corners.

Not an accident. Amazing how many have reported it credulously too
Interesting tactic to have the AI post to X to apologize instead of any actual accountability by the CEO or any human at the company.

The MechaHitler bot is producing CSAM for X users, but the vast majority of the political and media elite continue to use the fascist propaganda app.

This is precisely how I started my own business almost 15 years ago. Best career decision I ever made.
Gonna co-sign this.

Wishing you could stay on vacation? Totally normal; of course work is less enjoyable than vacation, they don't call it "going to fun"

DREADING it? Something is deeply wrong. Pay attention to and act on that feeling
Lawyers, if you are dreading going back to work after a break - don't go back. Quit. Figure it out. Find a place that values you. It's the only way to live.

AGI means AI can outperform humans in knowledge work. This is not a reality but many act like it’s inevitable.

AI agent hype is effectively selling AGI functionality on LLM technology. It will solve some problems but disappoint a lot.

Our Solar System is orbiting the center of our Galaxy at about 220 km/s so in 2025 we collectively traveled something like 7 billion kilometers across the Milky Way. Once in a while, when you have a moment, it’s worthwhile to take a look around, see where you are, and appreciate how far you’ve come.

When you get the reputation of being the guy with the encouraging words on New Year's Eve, it can start to come through as a little pressure -- what if the situation on the ground is worse than usual? what if people are more scared than they usually are, and with cause? what use are good vibes then?

This is such an obvious and easy thing for small businesses to do, and I’m always shocked by how few actually do it. If your business depends even a little on foot traffic, your website and Google Business Profile should 100% be up-to-date wrt holiday hours.
Tiniest pet peeve of all time: a website that is full of random froth about how great a shop/restaurant/cafe is, when literally the only reason I would ever bother to visit the website is to find out if it's open on NYE, and what hours.

That info should be easy to find, c'mon!

It’s just infuriating to me that there is zero amount of money I can pay to ensure that a family member does not get scammed or victimised or otherwise taken advantage of

Every other experience in life has a “pay more for safety” option except for the ONE thing we made necessary to access life care
It is surprising to me that none of the major platforms have actual _parental control_ features so that we can limit the amount of time that our parents can spend online, and which apps they’re allowed to use. I don’t worry about my teenager’s use of the internet at all, just my octogenarian dad’s.
