What is better than pet photos?

You know the answer is a praying mantis on a rock hammer

Sometimes Frankie helps out with the housework 😹
A handsome cat, Frankie, with tabby stripes on his back, a white front and a Christmas tree shaped splotch on his nose, sitting on top of a bookcase with a Swiffer cloth in his paw. He looks like he's on a mission to tidy (he isn't)

A Red-femured Spotted Orbweaver hangs in the middle of her web. The pattern and setae on the dorsal surface of her abdomen look like a tiny cat face.

Day 7 of #Arachtober another spider with prey. I thought ladybirds (ladybugs for Americans) tasted foul so aren’t predated but it appears not to bother this one. I think the spider is a lace web spider, Amaurobius sp. They often build these lacy webs in windows of garages and sheds.

Prowling spider, Syspira sp., one of my favorite desert species. This one was barely 1/2 inch including leg span. Shot at 4.5X & a slight crop; nine shots stacked together to get the whole face in focus. I love how well camouflaged it is on the pale sand, like a little spider ghost. #Arachtober 🌿🐙👻🕷️
An extreme closeup photo, at ground level, looking into the face of a cream-colored spider on similarly-colored sand. The spider has sparse dark hairs and several longer spiny hairs, and dark eyes. All eight eyes are visible. Most of the legs are out of frame. There's a bit of crinkly silk in the lower left.

Rabid Wolf Spider (Rabidosa rabida) - #Arachtober 8
Not as bad as it sounds. It doesn't mean it has rabies. The Rabida scientific name from Latin translates to extremely violent, furious, or unfavorable behavior. Found in South Tex.

The Cook Strait giant wētā (Deinacrida rugosa) is an anostostomatid from New Zealand. It's one of the largest insects in the world! Major threats to this cutie include land clearing and predation by rats. It's listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. #EverydayEnsifera

Glamour model Frankie, working his angles 🐾
A handsome cat with tabby stripes on his back and forehead, a white front and a Christmas tree shaped splotch on his nose, sitting in an empty cupboard. He’s sitting tall with his hind legs casually sticking out to his side. His fur is plush and luxurious, and he’s staring into the camera with a blank expression. A true supermodel.

I can’t believe I have to say this, but historically, masked men who kidnap families in the middle of the night are usually not the good guys.

"Salticids" are members of the family Salticidae, the Jumping Spiders; just one of many very different spider families. Jumpers specifically don't build webs at all, but the spiders that do have special structures on their feet that allow them to walk on their webs without getting stuck or tangled.

This is SUPER exciting. My dad had this pond built at my childhood home in NW PA 5 years ago...

It appears a #beaver has moved in! Dad, who passed Sept. 6, would have been SO thrilled at this development! My sis just put camera traps up to see if we can get images. 🤞
A small tree that was taken down near the woods, with gnaw marks along it, and lots of beaver "saw dust" and "chips" in the grass! This appears to the entrance to the beaver's hidey hole/house -- and in this image, a freshly chewed log/stick appers!

Raccoons are one of the most common mammals seen in the USA that aren't domesticated. They're extremely smart, proven by several studies, to have the ability to solve puzzles and pick locks using their incredible memories. Their teeth are interesting too....
A night, black and white photo from my garden showing a raccoon sitting down facing the camera. It's holding its front paws together close to the ground. Its black face mask and nose are visible as are its little, roundish raccoon ears. Its mouth is slightly open giving a look at its teeth including its canine teeth. There are plants and shrubs to the side of the raccoon and behind it. There are small landscaping rocks on the ground.
