There is one thing that defines all these heroes. They consider Jewish life to be as sacred as theirs. So sacred that they'd be willing to lose their lives to protect us. They are, in a word, the ultimate pluralists. They see all life as equal and thus worth protecting. And there is one thing that most describes those who try to kill us: they think some lives are valuable and others aren't. @eladnehorai It is this that distinguishes between heroes and villains in these stories. That and those who are brave enough to act in the moment. There are people who don't want us to talk in universal language in moments like this, but the point of these moments is to remember that all life is valuable. It is the ultimate principle that protects innocent lives. They protected Jews because they would protect anyone. In Bondi and in Haifa, that was the equation. @eladnehorai

The memory of Bondi and the memory of Haifa to me are about the dual competing realities we are all in a grand struggle to resolve. For thousands of years, we have been living in a world where most people took for granted that some life is valuable and others aren't. That, briefly, has begun to change on a larger level. But it has a long way to go, and there are many who would like to take us backwards. @eladnehorai Those who want us going backwards are the shooters and the pogrom participants. And those who order the bombings of children. And those who want moments like this to be about breaking apart solidarity instead of strengthening it. And there are those who take us forward. The Ahmed al-Ahmeds. The ultimate way to end pogroms and shootings is to ensure that more people are Ahmed al-Ahmed. That more people are willing to hide others who aren't in their tribe during a pogrom. In other words, to create a world where all life is seen as valuable. @eladnehorai
