meanwhile, one of the key ideas behind isotype is that "repetition is better than scale or volume"

isotype is really grounded in a "this chart has to be understood" mentality that's missing from tufte's "charts can be a tool" manifesto
January 6, 2026 at 8:30 PM
tufte describes a sort of minimalist aesthetic but at the same time many of his diagrams are not obvious or clear

he loves that russian troop movement graph and i can see why, but it's also sheer ornamentation

it's littered with numbers as it's real hard to gauge the actual size of things

It's on chiswick common, next to elliot road

in the opening of the video there's a glimpse of the sign further up, "Autocheck UK" and there's only one real match for "autocheck london" on google maps

you can still see where they repaired the road
December 25, 2025 at 3:21 AM
i manually tracked things more than a decade ago, which lead to this actigraph style pattern, i.e the second column is the first column, minus a day

it's a row of 0-48, then 24-72, so you can easily see patterns

back then i had some stability but you can see it easily goes to shit too
December 22, 2025 at 12:58 AM
i tracked 2020 and you can see there's a general downward shift like an old crt without vsync
