Modeling the joint effects of genetic drift, mutation, and selection on loci that contribute to disease risk suggests that variation at many such loci is shaped more by their pleiotropic effects on non-disease traits than by their contribution to disease risk
Mutation–selection–drift balance models of complex diseases
Genetic variation is maintained through a balance of mutation, natural selection, and genetic drift. Although this general picture is well understood, it i

Books read in 2025.
The Message, The Sympathizer, and White Fragility were all great and had a big impact on me. Vonnegut is fantastic. John Warner's new book is also great (particularly for teachers). Also re-read Moby Dick, a new version with lovely prints frequently throughout.

Just gave my last talk of the year!

2025 was quite packed, I gave talks about:
- the age-period-cohort problem
- making rigorous causal inference more mainstream
- mediation analysis
- marginaleffects
- causal graphs (x10)

If you're curious, check out my slides here: juliarohrer.com/resources/

The concept of "fitness" is central to evolutionary biology but it's not entirely worked out. There are multiple definitions, doubts about predictive power, problems with internal consistency. Here's a paper from last year attempting to solve some of these problems. doi.org/10.1093/evol...

Sharks absolutely get cancer, and people claiming otherwise are pseudoscientific grifters preying on the desperate.

Even if sharks did not get cancer, eating shark would not cure your cancer any more than eating LeBron James would make you better at basketball.
