Rereading @austinkleon.bsky.social's Show Your Work might finally push me to be active online. The prompt "What are you working on?" has such a beautiful way to cut through the anxiety of not knowing what to post ❣️

Spotted a BSOD on the UP train in Toronto. Using Windows on public displays is wild

Spent a lot of time setting up #neovim yesterday. While setting up neovim itself is a sinkhole of time, #vim itself feels like a shift in the way you think about code.

Had a short social media hiatus, but I have a cool little open-source library I've been working on that I plan to release soon. A quick detour from my main projects :)

Can't wait for the AI bubble to at least calm down a bit so that my favorite podcasts talk about something else for a change...

Using AI to help in writing code is fantastic. I see how the newer AI software building tools can help someone who has never learnt to code, BUILD software, but I don't see how it helps maintain and improve it, based on user-feedback and changing requirements - sustainably, long-term.

Having a clearly defined MVP is the most important lesson I'm learning. Ideas can inflate the scale of your product. Having a well-defined Minimum Viable Product, with a realistic action-plan, alleviates a lot of stress. #buildinpublic

Eschewing the standard sidebar and panel layout to a UX where the keyboard is the primary way of interacting with the program. I always loved that about professional accounting software. #buildinginpublic

Begun working on FreshBooks; a user-friendly open source desktop accounting software. Also gave me the perfect to excuse to use Go in a large project - Wails with Go is a fantastic framework to write desktop applications in!

Bookkeeping and accounting software on desktop are in a strange frustrating space right now. Either you have web-apps that are too limiting (to be noob-friendly), or a behemoth aimed at businesses.

Alright, let's try #BuildingInPublic. Set up my company, set up @sentientpixels.bsky.social, time to build some cool stuff!

"Marvel Bad" is such an easy video essay topic; happy to see an information dense, well-done video about a problem they had to solve that some of us probably never even thought of ♥️

You know why I love reading? It’s one of the last true escapes—no ads, no distractions, just pure immersion in a story.

4000 Weeks: Time Management for Mortals (Oliver Burkeman) is easily one of the most important books I've ever read.

Highly highly recommended for anyone struggling with productivity and time management.

Man goes to doctor. Says he's depressed. Says everyone is laughing at him. Doctor says, 'Treatment is simple. Great rapper Kendrick Lamar is in town tonight. Go and see him. That should pick you up.' Man bursts into tears. Says, 'But doctor…I am Drake.'

Shoutout to @supernote.com - one of the most ethical and reasonable companies I've seen in while. Recently learnt that they don't do Black Friday sales so as to not partake in rampant consumerism, which is AWESOME. Definitely eyeing the product for myself.

Yes, it is absolutely ridiculous. Sometimes, my Windows clean install will get an update and I have to go through these bullshit pages again, them trying to sign me up for something random each time. Usually OneDrive or Office365 or Copilot.

Even as a tech person those pages are terrifying.
for my next newsletter and episode i bought the bestselling laptop on Amazon to try and explain how shitty most people's exposure to tech is. Currently at 30 minutes of menus and updates. I have agreed to three privacy policies and created two new accounts. We live in hell

I'm helping my girlfriend look for a new laptop, and I already know Windows 11 is going to ruin something with it.

Linux isn't even an option because of the CAD software she needs to use.

#indiehacking just seems like the digital equivalent of making a mom and pop store - simple products, decent incomes. Seems fascinating.
