You played aristocrat turned pirate Stede Bonnet in the TV comedy Our Flag Is Death with Taika Waititi as Blackbeard. Were you shocked when it was suddenly cancelled? It was a bit of a shock because we knew it was very suc-cessful. The numbers were big and globally it was a big hit. We had already sold the first season or two to the BBC [it is now available on BBC iPlayer] and we knew we had a massive fandom. Creator David Jenkins said publicly he only wanted to do three seasons, but they pulled the rug from underneath us. I was in Toronto at the time and I got a phone call from David saying they were not going to pick up a third season. The only good thing is we kind of had a happy ending with Stede and Blackbeard.
