Spend my time thinking about crochet blankets, education, and children's career aspirations. Not necessarily in that order.
I enjoyed reading this. Clear discussion of the problem with yet another 'literacy'.

I mean, he studied at Northumbria University, but that makes it even better.

As a parent, I work really hard not to have a favourite child. The long-running cosseting of Andrew is pretty strong evidence that QE2 very much did have a favourite child.

Under Over Over - West Hampstead

So it's taken a while, but I've finally found a location where you can clearly see London Underground trains traveling over London Overground trains.

The vantage point is at West Hampstead Overground station at the end of the platform.

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

@alomshaha.bsky.social I was at an open air museum in Denmark today and they had a watch exhibition, and I saw it and thought of you!

Just because they’re funny doesn’t mean they’re right. The Dr Fox Effect shows we mistake charisma for clarity. The more you know, the harder it is to see what novices don’t. That’s the Curse of Knowledge. Know your subject and how it’s learned.

"Britain isn't broken"

We have our problems but the doomerism is getting out of hand.

I look at the real picture on crime, migration, social cohesion and the economy - rather than the dsyoptian fantasies of the radical right.

Absolutely this ⬇️
No, employers need to do their own training. It’s not educators’ job to make sure that school-leavers — or graduates — have the specific skills that each company needs. Employers need to invest in their workforce.
We need our children to leave school ready for life in the real world

To ensure that young people embarking on a career have the skills and mindset employers are looking for, education must be linked more closely to the workplace, writes David Blunkett.

The damage that TwXter has done to British national discourse is obvious when politicians and their advisors talk about DEI and other strongly-US focused talking points. They can't even get the letters in the order we generally use them in the UK.

And much more memorable than another branded pen, notebook or waterbottle.
this is such a nice idea at a conference! Headshots are expensive and often not offered by universities (I've only worked in one dept that did this) so this is great
Need a headshot? Visit the headshot booth in the APS Exhibit Hall 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM today and Saturday to have a professional photo taken. Sponsored by Sage Publishing.

Interesting blog about this paper on AI.

Particularly important to think about what problem the AI is meant to be solving, and to involve practitioners and patients in the testing of the tech in actual settings, not just simulations.

But...surely children's picturebooks don't have to have narrative integrity?
Have recently read two children’s non-fiction picturebooks which feature characters - a brown kid and his / her parent / grandparent who don’t actually *do* anything in the book except appear at the start before the book spews “science” facts on the page. This seems really cynical to me. #kidlit

Really helpful thread about the increasing invisibility of those children and adults for whom autism is not a 'superpower'.
This is a really poor article by the BBC

It writes about #autism almost exclusively from the high functioning end of the spectrum and at times seems to almost trivialise the condition and the impact it can have
Are there more autistic people now?
Why is the number of autism diagnoses changing? And what does it mean for autistic people?
