My third peer-reviewed article is now out with the journal Ethnohistory! It is about Powhatan sovereignty in the early 17th century. My thanks go to a number of friends and colleagues who provided feedback on this article over the past three years. It wouldn’t be possible without so much support!

The clause allows Alberta to override parts of the charter of rights for up to five years.

I am convinced that the Mamdani-Trump meeting went so well because a Wicca or witchy person somewhere in the world decided to mess with some chaos magic. There is no other explanation.
Working people have been left behind in New York. In the wealthiest city in the world, one in five can't afford $2.90 for the train or bus. As I told Trump today— it’s time to put those people right back at the heart of our politics.

Being precariously employed is far from empowering yet I take what few positives I can from it. Besides, there are few things as satisfying as finalizing my syllabus for next semester when it’s over six weeks ahead of the start time.

I believe the technical phrase for this situation is « I win. »

The vast body of research that Ken Burns relied upon to make his new documentary on the American Revolution would be practically impossible to be produced today, what with the defunding of humanistic scholarship, the collapse of stable academic jobs, the attack on public history & academic freedom.🗃️

All of us from the post-2008 era (and before, no doubt) have traumatic memories of the academic job market, but I don't think the real problem was the hotel rooms (or the ballroom!), & I think it should be noticed that the real problem (no jobs, ridiculous power disparities) is now worse

Fun fact: Carney wasn’t even welcome in Prince Rupert for this announcement — local nations including Lax Kw’alaams and Metlakatla are opposing Ksi Lisims LNG. He had to change the venue last minute, yet the Feds and province are still rushing to fast-track this giveaway to US billionaires. #bcpoli

Presenting today
@thenacbs.bsky.social on Indigenous South American travel to England and the role of their diplomacy in preserving sovereignty during the 16th and 17th c. You may not have heard much about the Yao and Arromaia polities but their agency shaped much of early colonial history.

Here in Ontario, Doug Ford is doubling down on nuclear, which is the most expensive form of electricity. And subsidizing it with our tax dollars.
