I'm back at Slate next week after mat leave, and will be looking at pitches again! Particularly interested in health and science opinion and analysis, and/or with a first person angle, as well as features (2,500+ words, deeply reported) that turn a big idea on its head. [email protected]

No, Grammarly, I want to keep the em dash. It is part of my writing cadence.

Back from tiny-human leave as of this morning. Please send me your climate/environment/ag/public health pitches! (And if you sent one in recent weeks and got an OOTO/silence but have not yet placed the piece elsewhere, feel free to re-send.)

Trying—a little—to be more present or lost in the moment. In short, not stuck in an endless loop of doomscrolling.

I talk about it more in my latest Substack article:

Being an introvert author means your research phase looks antisocial but is actually the most social thing you'll do—deep conversations with books, sources, and ideas.

The monster is a friend, or so we @contingent-mag.bsky.social suggest in our CFP... a fiend to historians especially, though not exclusively.

Pitch us an essay about your historical monster, whatever form that monster takes, by October 20!

They say to be bold about what you do and what you love and to put yourself out there, so this is me trying to do just that.

Writing is thinking you have a pretty solid idea of what you want to write about and where you want to pitch it and then taking a shower and getting a bunch of brilliant ideas and then jotting them down and then waking up the next morning not knowing which of those you should do.

So I’ve kind of quietly stepped into a new role at GameSpot over the last couple weeks heading up our op-ed section and it’s maybe the most gratifying work I’ve ever done. Sounds cheesy but working with freelancers and bringing their ideas to life has quickly become one of the best parts of my job 🤍

Can anyone relate to this? I do! And that's why I'm on this road to discovering my voice. Especially my writing voice in the form of storytelling. ✨
