I have friends living in San Francisco and planned to take one of them if I didn’t find another Spirit or NWSL fan needing a ticket. My usual championship partner in crime was recently laid off and isn’t in a position to use the ticket until / if / when that changes and finances stabilize.

You are correct. I shouldn’t have gone to Wikipedia, which had incomplete information. I just remembered 57 points and that tracked there.

Relevent delivered on its promise to beat TEAM's best effort in the U.S. when it brokered a six-year, $1.5billion deal for the Champions League rights with Paramount in 2022. We are now about to find out if Relevent can work its magic away from its home territory as it is starting the tender process for the next cycle of rights to the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League in Europe's five biggest markets on October 6.

Yes & no. Americans are used to traveling great distances to watch their home team. Not so in Europe, where the most traveling they do rarely if ever requires a plane (exception is teams is making the Champions League).

U.S. fans of Barcelona will certainly travel to Miami for a competitive match.

But yes, Ross owns Hard Rock Stadium, which is where Relevant wanted to host international soccer / football matches. Relevant sued U.S. Soccer & FIFA to be able to do so & eventually settled with FIFA.

Where will Villarreal v Barcelona be played? At Hard Rock Stadium.

League Matches

In April 2019, Relevent sued the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) and FIFA in the Supreme Court of New York, accusing the organizations of having a conflict of interest in sanctioning professional games and conspiring to block Relevent from bringing regular-season games to North America from overseas leagues.
The lawsuit stated that the Federation was threatening Relevent's soccer promotion business after it denied two of the company's
proposals to have foreign league and cup matches at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
In September 2020, the United States Department of Justice entered the dispute], warning FIFA that banning popular soccer games in the US could be a breach of US anti-trust laws. In 2024, it was announced that FIFA and Relevent had settled its lawsuit, allowing for international league matches to be played in the US.

First recommendation: Don’t put all your eggs in one (Apple) basket. 🙃

Frankly, MLS doesn’t have the product to compete with European football. It’s selling point in the U.S. was the games are local or were on TV in the evenings…and then the Apple deal.

But you can even blame the NFL a bit more directly in Stephen Ross. The Dolphins were Ross’ first foray into sports, & since then he’s gotten into F1 & founded Relevant (in 2012), which pivoted in 2018 to “media rights commercial…platform for clubs… leagues looking to expand internationally.”

With nine of its 20 teams under American ownership, Serie A hopes to be the first major European soccer league to play a game in the United States, Italian league president Ezio Simonelli said Tuesday.
The possibility of hosting games abroad has become more likely after New York-based company Relevent, a company run by Miami Dolphins' billionaire owner Stephen Ross, settled in their antitrust lawsuit with FIFA over the ability for leagues to host games in foreign territories. FIFA subsequently said they would reconsider their statute barring such matches, though they have yet to issue any new policies on the matter.
Relevent remain in a legal battle with the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) over that ability, but given the federation had previously used FIFA policy to only allow exhibition matches to take place, it seems probable that there will be games from European leagues played in the U.S. in the near future.

"Holding a game abroad also requires authorization by the local league so we need to make an agreement in that regard. But we are considering timeframes that would work for this.
We want to be the first league to set up an event like this in the United States," Simonelli said at an event in New York.
Simonelli was elected two months ago.
"This is a market that we count on a lot. We have nine clubs under American ownership and one Canadian, so I also need to thank them since they elected me," Simonelli said. "And we have other prospective buyers lined up."
The American owned clubs are: Atalanta, Fiorentina, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Parma, Roma, Venezia and Hellas Verona. Bologna is owned by a Canadian -- Joey Saputo.
Serie A is also home to several U.S. standouts like Christian Pulisic (Milan), Weston McKennie (Juventus) and Timothy Weah (Juventus).

History

Relevent was founded in 2012 by RSE Ventures as a sports media company and promoter of sporting events. Due to Relevent's work, European soccer clubs, including Germany's FC Bayern Munich, France's Lyon, UK's Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund, have become regular guests in the USA.
In 2018, Relevent began its transition from a live events company to a media rights commercial agency and internationalization platform for clubs, federations, and leagues looking to expand internationally.

You have to have competitive matches that mean something. The Serie A is one of least popular of the top European leagues in the U.S., a lot of teams have American owners, and several USMNT players play in the league. That spells $$$.

Not trying hijack your threading. However, markets are markets, & there’s already a strong international soccer following in the U.S. But
summer Exhibition matches in the U.S. don’t feature competitive matches / all starters. So how do you grow the fandom beyond ppl that will attend exhibitions?
