my takeaway from climate week nyc is that "climate storytelling" is a little too much "we must reimagine our deepest souls in relationship to mother nature and the moral abyss of the polycrisis into which we must now stare" and not enough "ok but get a heat pump"

At the UN today Trump called climate change the ‘greatest con job ever perpetrated on the world.’

Congrats to the clever plotters for enlisting the planet’s glaciers, oceans and forests in their scheme.

Online chatter suggests that the DOE Climate Change (Denying) Working Group has been disbanded and the report will be withdrawn. 😂

Seems that violating FACA and the Information Quality Acts have consequences.

Not seen any official announcement though.

Yep. There's no way around reducing fossil fuel emissions, despite people pushing their creative ideas: “no current geoengineering idea passes an objective and comprehensive test regarding its use in the coming decades”.

Scrapping DOE's Earth system model would be a disaster for climate science, also abroad. The Norwegian Earth system model has a similar origin and we use the same vegetation module. This will set us back years, unless we pick up the pace here in Europe.

More sad news for the polar community... Arctic Research Consortium of the United States (@arcus-arctic.bsky.social) is shutting down.

We all lose here. The past 8 months have been unthinkable, and their consequences for the future even more so.
Screenshot from the ARCUS August 2025 newsletter:

Dear ARCUS Community,

It is with a mix of gratitude and sadness for our community that we share an important update about ARCUS’s future. After more than three decades of connecting, supporting, and facilitating collaboration within the U.S. Arctic research community, ARCUS will sunset its operations at the end of September 2025 and formally dissolve as a nonprofit organization.

This decision comes after careful consideration and reflection on the changing needs of the Arctic research landscape. While ARCUS as an institution will close, the impact of the relationships, collaborations, and shared work we have fostered will continue to ripple through the community for years to come. We are profoundly grateful for the many individuals—past and present—who have served on our Board, worked on our staff, contributed as partners, and supported ARCUS’s mission with passion and dedication.

We want to assure you that we remain active and committed right up to the end

Good article (in Norwegian) highlighting how Arctic climate change is impacting ecosystems and permafrost in Norway. Working with a team at UNIS, those collapsed ice wedges on Svalbard will be sampled next week to determine how much carbon is lost to the atmosphere. With @ketilisaksen.bsky.social

Planting trees is not the solution to the climate crisis, because there are so many ways in which it can be done wrong. The adequate solution is (surprise, surprise) to reduce fossil fuel emissions.

New assessment on the biophysical potential of forestation to sequester carbon. As expected, we found just a fraction of what other assessments found, because we considered the obvious no-nos, such as risk to biodiversity, excess water use, and regional warming.

The climate case for planting trees has been overhyped — but it’s not too late to fix it
Reforestation can contribute significantly to tackling climate change, but research found its global potential is only a fraction of what’s been claimed.
