First heard of the Holomodor in school history as a horror in far off Stalinist Russia 1932-33. A Ukrainian friend in 2014 brought the harsh reality of deliberate starvation in collective memory, at least 3 million+ dead, into much closer focus. No wonder UKR is fighting so hard to stay free.😔
On one side of my family we have zero knowledge of our lineage before my grandpa. There was just nobody left to ask. He wasn’t even sure if his last name was real or made up. And there’s a story like this in almost every Ukrainian household.
