Inside the mother of all Neolithic tombs ... Newgrange in Ireland. This photo, from excavator Michael O'Kelly's book, shows the chamber (with spiral carving) that is illuminated via the famous roofbox opening at winter solstice. A 5,200-yr-old celebration of the return of the sun. #TombTuesday

Important advice thread for ICE in Minnesota.
Hey, I want to offer some helpful tips for coping with the cold for ICE folks who might have come from warmer places.

1. Wear cotton socks! Cotton is nice and soft next to your skin and will absorb your sweat so your feet stay warm. Cotton everything but ESPECIALLY socks!
Good morning to fuckers in our neighborhood kidnapping our neighbors! Can you see the city skyline? No? You’re wondering if Minneapolis burned down again overnight? Oh no, sweetie. That’s ice crystals in the air . It looks like it will get to around -8F without windchill! Please enjoy your stay!

YEAH THE BIGGER JOY IS WHEN UR SMART FRIEND & FELLOW WRITER LIKES YOUR BOOK 😭 this is the most generous thread
Truly is there any bigger joy than reading a friend’s smart, nuanced, passionate book and being suffused with love and pride and critical hope? I think not

Also: I cried a lot!

My book was one the books these kids saved. They are absolute heroes. But I'm so enraged that ignorant adults put them in this position.
Last month, eight books were removed from Georgia's statewide reading book for students. It was teenagers who brought this censorship to the spotlight–even though it's not their job to clean up grown-up messes.

Get to know 3 of those teens here.

It is very weird seeing my friends and family slowly start to realize we're not overreacting.
Read every word & share with everyone you know. This is real life here in Chicago. Americans need to know this grotesque reality & stand with us.
Kyle Kingsbury is not a journalist. He is not an op-ed writer.

He is a computer safety researcher.

And he has written one of the most compelling, comprehensive accounts of the ongoing hell in Chicago that you could possibly imagine.

In under 1600 words.

And so a new form of government was born. A system that required citizens to yell at a handful of mostly elderly politicians every few weeks, demanding them not to doom us all. A Screamocracy.

look I know being an engaged citizen IS the work of democracy but it is also the work of elected officials not to create situations where everyone has to be mobilized all the time to prevent them from allowing some kind of Dickensian horror on a Sunday night while you're in between loads of laundry

Good bye, picture books.

My 6-year-old and I just finished reading our first chapter-length book together.

THE WILD ROBOT was the perfect introduction to a complex, well-told narrative.

It’s been incredible to witness her tiny human brain coming to terms with it all — “a book can be THIS?!”
