All right all right time for a new #PortfolioDay. Hello! I'm Lauren, a biologist by day and scientific illustrator by... other times. I illustrate for publications, outreach materials, & sometimes board games! 🎨🪶🐡🧪🌎

Digital illustration of a nosa' luta (Rota White-eye), a small yellow-green songbird with a white ring of feathers around the eye, and an orange beak and feet. This bird is drawn with its wings spread and feet held at the ready, about to land on an unseen branch. The background is a loose blur of colors similar to those in the canopy on Rota - bright yellows and greens, with hints of blue from the yoga berries abundant in this species' habitat. For personal use in my research with The Institute for Bird Populations. Illustration of an island (Bird Island, Saipan) set in a shallow tropical lagoon, fringed by Casuarina and coconut trees. The rocky island is covered in vegetation and tiny dots - lots and lots of birds! More birds are seen flying toward the island, and in the foreground some of these are identifiable as Brown Noddy and Red-tailed Tropicbird. For Nature (NorthStar Games) Illustration of an Indochinese Green-Magpie with its wings spread as it lands in a thicket of tropical foliage and flowers, all under a bright blue sky with a few soft clouds. This bird is brilliantly colored with a bright green crested head, black mask, red-orange wings, and fanned yellow tail with a black bar. For NorthStar Games' board game Nature. Commissioned portrait of a Phidippus californicus immature female on a stalk of Swiss chard. She is covered in fine tan hair as she peers inquisitively toward the viewer. She has long black hairs above the eyes at the corners of her head which look like eyelashes.

🪶🌎🧪 On September 28th, Rota TMAPS banders Greta Walser and Jason Talbott observed a color-banded Whimbrel on the lawn of a church directly across from their home. (1/4)

Thanks to all of you who donated in the final stretch! I've received the final donors list spanning 9-22 to 9-30, and will work on all of those birds as I find time - probably mostly after October 8 when I'm back home, so I appreciate your patience while I wrap up my travels out here in the Pacific!

11:25 PM: we trudge along fresh puddles on the way home. There is light from somewhere far away keeping the horizon awake.
A square pastel drawing of a foggy night scene. The sky is a dark grey, slightly lighter above the horizon. There is a line of trees standing in mid-distance, half-engulfed by the fog. There are puddles in the grass in the foreground reflecting the faint light.

When images of glacial retreat are posted online it's amazing how many people's gut reaction is "summer vs winter!" without any consideration for latitude + light levels or knowledge of actual glaciers.
#ChristianAslund
#Blomstrandbreen
#Svalbard
The image shows six panes. The top left pane shows the Blomstrandbreen glacier (Svalbard) as photographed in 1928 by the Norwegian Polar Institute labelled "The Arctic, Summer 1928". The middle left pane shows the same glacier as photographed in 2002 by Christian Aslund labelled "The Arctic, Summer 2002". The bottom left pane shows the same glacier as photographed in 2022 by Christian Aslund labelled "The Arctic, Summer 2022". The top right pane is black and labelled "The Arctic, Winter 1928". The bottom right pane is all black and labelled "The Arctic, Winter 2002". The bottom right pane is all black and labelled "The Arctic, Winter 2022". Yes, the labels and panes on the right are added in jest but the topic is serious: overall this glacier has retreated over 2 km since 1928 and over 3 km since 1861.

Illustration of a Common Nighthawk on the wing at sunset over dark purple and bright orange clouds. It turns in flight and opens its wide mouth to try and nab a moth out of the air. It is a brown mottled bird with lots of black and white speckling and barring, and two broad white bands near the tips of the wings.

We report: it is a little less hot, for a shorter amount of time, but when the sun is out, it is out. We left our sunglasses in our other jacket - subconsciously, we must have thought autumn meant no sun. We are left helplessly squinting for our trouble. It is a bright day.
