Yesterday Hey Ed I love your work, been following for ages and agree with everything you say about Al, and particularly LLMs. One thing I would love to see on better offline, and thought I'd share it with you as an idea for a show that you can freely take, is an episode that talks about how good LLMs are - what they can do, how people use them etc, because to my mind it is brilliant, amazing even, technology, which makes some workers more efficient and helps every man on the street to search the internet more quickly (if not reliably). It just isn't anything more than any of that, and that in itself isn't worth a 10th of the investment, valuation and hype we've seen, and it's never going to be, but I think if you did a show where you talked about all the good things about it but in that context it would give a lot of credibility to your criticism as it shows balance. The thing about elon going to epstein island in 2014 is that Epstein very publicly became a registered convicted sex offender in 2008, 6 years earlier.

Note: Epstein set up Elon's brother Kimbal with a girlfriend in 2011, 3 years after Epstein became a registered convicted sex offender.

I became an AI skeptic bc the only cogent use cases AI boosters gave were, "a better search engine". but regular search engines already worked fine for 99% of people. the few folks who needed something more were like, me and my colleagues, none of whom found tremendous value in AI search tools

Anthropic is aggressively hitting me with ads on instagram for Claude and it’s all people being like “I use Claude to brainstorm” or asking Claude where they can find two colors together in a city. What a pile of crap, how does anybody still believe this is the future? It’s Search 2 and it sucks

NEW: The US Army website for its bases in Bavaria, Germany told its soldiers and employees that it might need to obtain free food from the German government during the US government shutdown.

The Army later altered publication to remove a list of food banks, but we have the original text here:

It is remarkable - and ridiculous - that the head of ChatGPT at OpenAI can still not directly explain why people use ChatGPT
Let’s talk about just the state of ChatGPT itself. It’s the fastest-growing consumer product of all time. Like I mentioned earlier, its user base has nearly quadrupled in the last year, and that’s at a pretty huge scale. I think a lot of people on the outside are wondering where this growth is coming from. Can you share why ChatGPT is growing, how it’s growing, or anything about its biggest markets and demographics? The first hire I made after ChatGPT was a data scientist, because I was so confused. I would be talking to every user and they would tell me a different story as to why they were loving ChatGPT, and it was just deeply confusing to me and I had to get to the bottom of it. Over time, I got a sense of what the use cases were. There was writing and there was technical stuff like coding, and there was chit-chat, and there was searchy stuff like informational queries, et cetera. I think largely those use cases are still here to stay. So if you look at what people are doing, it’s not completely different from a year ago, or before we had all this growth. I do think that a few things have changed. Obviously, we have done a bunch of work on the product. That work you can break down into sort of pure model improvements like the behavior, the personality, its capabilities, its likelihood of refusing a request. Then sort of hybrid product and research capabilities, like search has been a really big one. Personalization has been a really exciting improvement as well. And then your classic “growth work,” which we do surprisingly little of, but things like not having to log into ChatGPT to use it were a tremendous success. It was, again, super aligned with users. It’s not a growth hack, it’s just actually making the product much more accessible to people who want to use it. So it’s been a third, a third, a third between those three different categories of things: pre-model improvements, research product hybrid improvements like search, and then your classic removing fr… On the first one, there’s just, I think, a natural effect of watching the people around you starting to use it. There’s so much discovery that happens off product. If you ever go on TikTok, there’s these videos where people are sharing their use cases and there’s tens of thousands of comments and every use case in there. It’s like when you go to the Instant Pot community online, where all these recipes are there. People are sharing their prompts, and I think that just takes time to develop and for people to watch what other people are doing. So I think this empty box problem, we’re starting to see some traction against it just by all the out-of-product discovery that’s happening. And then the other thing, this is a bit more philosophical, but I really do believe it, which is I think that delegation is a very unnatural thing for most people. I sit here in Silicon Valley and I’m a manager of people and I had to learn how to delegate, but 10 percent of the world is using this product weekly. And for most of them, I don’t think the idea of, “I have a task and I’m going to assign it to someone,” is super natural. It takes actually time to really understand yourself and reflect after you’ve begun to use the product to crack that. That has nothing to do with product, that has nothing to do with marketing or social or anything. That just has to do with, I think, people having a little bit of time to process and try this out and learn. I think that’s a huge part of the growth as well.

Prohibit discrimination against LGBTQ+ people. Pass the Equality Act. In 29 states, an LGBTQ+ individual can be denied a job or housing based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. They can be denied service at a restaurant or hotel. No state or community in the United States should be allowed to discriminate and the federal Equality Act would prohibit such discrimination nationwide. Winning passage of this landmark civil rights legislation would be a top priority of a Buttigieg administration. Rescind the Trump administration's efforts to strip protections against discrimination for LGBTQ+ Americans. A Buttigieg administration would immediately restore administrative regulations, guidance, and interpretations of federal civil rights laws that prohibit discrimination based on sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity. This will include ensuring that all shelters receiving federal funding will provide a safe and welcoming environment for homeless or displaced trans persons that aligns with their gender identity. Ensure that the freedom of religion is not exploited into a license to discriminate. Freedom of religion is a core American value that is protected by the First Amendment of the Constitution. The First Amendment does not allow institutions to impose their beliefs on others or cause them harm. The Buttigieg administration will conduct a thorough examination of unconstitutional religious exemption policies in the federal government, especially those deployed by the Trump administration to undermine the rights of LGBTQ+ people. This includes refocusing, reassigning, or removing offices that were put in place to enable discrimination, especially, for example, at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Ensure that every federal agency identifies discrimination against LGBTQ+ people and vigorously uses all available tools to stop it. All relevant agencies will restore interpretations of federal civil rights laws that prohibit discrimina… Protect LGBTQ+ students from bullying and ensure they learn in safe, supportive environments. Prohibit violence, bullying, and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Schools have a responsibility to ensure the safety and dignity of each student. When LGBTQ+ students feel safe and protected, the overall learning environment becomes more welcoming and inclusive for all students. Research shows that schools which enumerate or list characteristics that are the most frequent targets of harassment not only make marginalized students more visible but reduce the frequency and number of incidents for all groups. To this end, Pete will also support the Student Nondiscrimination Act and the Safe Schools Improvement Act, and correctly interpret Title IX to include protection of transgender students. A Buttigieg administration will lead with this clear interpretation in all education policy. Provide funding to help states' education department create more safe and inclusive environments. As President, Pete will provide resources to help school districts develop resources and model training programs for teachers to better support LGBTQ+ students who are facing harassment, lack of acceptance, or discrimination at school, at home, or in their communities. Empower the Office of Civil Rights at the federal Department of Education to appropriately investigate complaints of discrimination by LGBTQ+ students and families. No student should feel that their education is limited or denied because of discrimination against their identity. As President, Pete will direct the Office of Civil Rights in the Department of Education to reverse the backsliding under the Trump administration, and make sure LGBTQ+ civil rights cases, and in particular, increase efforts to protect transgender students, who experience greater frequency of gender-based harassment, bullying, and violence, are investigated 34.35
