Same here, Tom! We in the White Mountains of New Hampshire have not had this kind of rain since the spring. Our foliage is not the spectacular display it typically is because of the drought, but now our rivers and streams are singing this morning.

Gonna be thinking about this lede for a minute.
(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.

@msnbc.com, you could really use these kinds of insights that @matthewjdowd.bsky.social regularly shares.

Some times in America we have the exact right President in office to lead in crucial moments (i.e. Lincoln). But at other times we have the exact wrong President in office (i.e. Andrew Johnson). Today we have the worst President in our history in office at a most crucial moment.

Pope Leo yesterday: “Someone who says ‘I’m against abortion but says I am in favor of the death penalty is not really pro-life, someone who says that ‘I’m against abortion, but I’m in agreement with the inhuman treatment of immigrants in the United States,’ I don’t know if that’s pro-life.”

Leo is the right soul in Rome for our troubled times. He is humble, kind, and brave, unlike our country’s elected leaders. He handled that abortion question with wisdom and grace.

Safe travels and joyous October views to you, Matthew. Our long summer drought has made for a less-than-stellar New Hampshire fall bloom. Nevertheless autumn stuns—even in an off year.

Because Democrats prosecuted Republicans for crimes they committed (to be precise, there was probable cause), it's only fair that Republicans prosecute Democrats for crimes they didn't commit. Do I have that right?

Hakeem Jeffries twisting a huge dial labeled “appeasement” back and forth as he anxiously looks out at a crowd of consultants, waiting for them to boo or clap

NEW: Jeffries praises Eric Adams in a statement, saying he has "served courageously and authentically for decades" and that "meaningful progress has been made" during his mayoralty.

Says he will "publicly weigh in" on the mayoral race "well before the start of early voting.”

Someone asked me recently what we do about #science stories that are lost or destroyed or buried. I was lucky to have diaries to reconstruct this story; what if we don't? I said art - fiction, plays, poems - have a lot of power to take fragments and show how things might have been, or could be.

Thank you, @melissasevigny.bsky.social, for introducing me to Elzada Clover and Lois Jotter. As you noted, their story matters, for so many reasons.

My wife and I both devoured BRAVE THE WILD RIVER, and have recommended it to our daughter, an environmental science major.
Book cover of Brave The Wild River: The Untold Story of Two Women Who Mapped the Botany of The Grand Canyon, by Melissa L. Sevigny. The title and author are listed in white type against a green background in the middle of the cover. Above it is a black-and-white photo of the book’s subjects, Lois Jotter and Elzada Clover; below is a painting of trees on either side of the Grand Canyon rim.

To add to this, in 1990, both house of Congress, under President Bush, passed a resolution expressing "deep regret" for Wounded Knee. Anyone who takes pride in what happened there is a scumbag of the highest order.
karl-jacoby.bsky.social
Only an administration intent on committing war crimes in the present and future would stoop to calling Wounded Knee a "battle" rather than what it truly was: a massacre of over 250 Lakotas, mainly women, children, and the elderly. 1/

This was my first time listening to Watt. He was good. Better yet, what could have been an awkward or silly situation with his brother was handled professionally. I was happily surprised by all of this, Chad.
