Check out our new results on the M87* #blackhole w/ @ehtelescope.bsky.social ! We now have 3 frames in a 4yr "movie", including polarisation ⇔ magnetic fields. It's like tracking extreme sunspots just outside a black hole, the brightness and fields flip, yet the shape stays the same bc...gravity!

It's easy to forget now but we had decades of steady advancement on trans rights. The 2016 bathroom bills invited huge backlash! It was only after the media constructed sports and youth medications as 'debates' that opposition moved from the far right to the polite center.
The repression of trans people is not, by and large, a grassroots outpouring of hatred from the American people. It's something that's been carefully planted and tended over years by a handful of media people and their pet reporters.
Heightened Scrutiny, a very good doc about the Supreme Court case that was just ruled on, does an impeccable and infuriating job laying out just how culpable the NYT and Atlantic are for the nation’s transphobia www.avclub.com/sundance-202...

If you're being cited like this by Clarence Thomas to uphold discrimination, you should take a long good look in the mirror and question your choices. Unfortunately, for the Times, this was the intended outcome.

There's a lot to unpack in the president's FY26 requested #NASA budget, but the near zeroing of the physics of the cosmos program (from $196M to $1.5M) is especially bleak. If passed, the future of high-energy astrophysics is not in the US. 🔭

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Issuing a press release that claims to have found "an ocean that is teeming with life" should require much stronger evidence than this spectrum. Even if the detection is correct, that doesn't tell you how the molecules formed. 🔭🧪

The UK Supreme Court endorsed segregating trans people entirely out of public life. They can exclude trans women from single sex spaces on the basis of sex and then exclude trans men on the basis of gender reassignment. Effectively, it allows the legal exclusion of trans people from public life.

This is all going to get harder, but they literally cannot legislate you out of existence. When tomorrow arrives, you will still be here, you will still be who you are, and we will all still be here with you.
The U.K. Supreme Court rules that Britain's equalities law defines a woman as someone born biologically female. The ruling means a transgender person with a certificate that recognizes them as female should not be considered a woman for equality purposes.

Nobody could have predicted this:

Hier ist das Wahlergebnis umgerechnet auf die gesamte Bevölkerung. Der neue Bundestag wird gewählt von nur 51% der Menschen in Deutschland.

Es gibt mehr Menschen ohne deutschen Pass, die von der Wahl ausgeschlossen werden, als AfD-Wähler. Wen repräsentiert der Bundestag?

Turns out black holes manage to accelerate particles no matter how small their poor donor star is!
Black holes snacking on small stars create particle accelerators that bombard Earth with cosmic rays
"We would like to understand the difference between these systems, which holds the clue to understand just how many cosmic rays are produced in the jets of microquasars."

The breadth and scope of cowardice amongst our scientific leadership is staggering.
SCOOP: The National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine, arguably the nation's most powerful scientific organization, is bending to political pressure and removing terms like "health equity" from pending reports. Members are not happy. Story by me: www.statnews.com/2025/02/20/n...
National Academies is altering pending reports to appease Trump administration, some members say
Words such as “health equity” are being replacing with vaguer terms, and 100 members sent a letter of protest to NASEM leaders.

Not exaggerating when I say I would like a personal, handwritten apology from every pundit who barfed out a dozen "the left wants to change the way you talk!" op-eds based on non-mandatory guidelines in obscure PDFs.
2. A memo distributed by NSA leadership to its staff says that on February 10, all NSA websites and internal network pages that contain banned words will be deleted.

Didn’t make it to round 2 of a fellowship due to “lack of high impact publications” because my first author high impact publication had an editorial delay of 3 months (!) that pushed it beyond the application deadline 👍🏼 love my job really
