In the wake of last week's horrific shooting, @jordanmck.bsky.social and I unpack the similarities and differences between preppers, Sovereign Citizens (aka Karens), small-s survivalists (bushcraft) and Big-S Survivalists (anti-govt)...

What is prepping – and how does it work in Australia?
Prepping in Australia is distinctive: less about guns and militias; more about food, water and community. While anti-government preppers are a problem, they’re rare.

My article in the Conversation today with @tomdoig.bsky.social on prepping culture in Australia. It’s not all guns and bunkers.

Excellent overview of prepping in Australia, in the context of Dezi Freeman, by @tomdoig.bsky.social & Jordan McKenzie. (Tom's writing a book on prepping.)

Compton, CA: A masked, heavily-armed man wearing body armor jumped out of a SUV today to kidnap a local resident.

He forgot to put the vehicle in park, causing it to roll down the street damaging other cars. He jumped in the vehicle (which had no platess) and drove off without identifying himself.

LA is America
not the main issue here but i'd really appreciate it if democratic politicians spoke out in support of big-city life and culture with the same energy and reverence that all politicians have for small towns

los angeles is "real america" and so are all the other big cities the president hates

The news today that EnergyAustralia had admitted that offsets are the wrong way to go is a win that has been a long time coming.

#nzpol new reckon: any economic proposal by the Greens is definitionally taken by the commentariat as the far left boundary of the Overton window. It follows that no Green policy suggestion is ever worth evaluating as it is automatically extreme.

(There is no Overton boundary on the right.)

That's my takeaway from this as well. Everything we now (rightfully) recognise as cringe would (by some - not you Cam) have been treated as genius/the secret sauce if the Tories had won. We need better means of measuring impact than credulously swallowing campaign PR.
