Tea and snacks were great, but on this Suikoden Tuesday, PLOT is happening.

I really like how the incredibly heavy plot of this game is contrasted with its presentation, no more clearly illustrated than by this picture of Cute Little Pixel Guys about to hang.

Confronted by the state apparatus on the doorstep of their childhood home, Nanami and Riou draw down and prepare to resist, knowing they are damned by the unfathomable will of capital regardless. Jowy and Riou's former superior officer, the traitor Captain Rowd, waylays Riou and Nanami, overwhelming our pure-hearted working class heroes with the might of the state, subduing and capturing them despite their brave efforts to resist. While being marched through town to the gallows, Riou and Jowy are stopped by Princess Jillia, passing in her royal carriage. Inquiring as to how these two boy children could be state spies requiring execution, an atrophied empathy within her nears the surface briefly before fading back into the abyss. Instead of wielding any power afforded by her royal blood to prevent or delay the murder of sweet little boy children, she goes about her day, seemingly unfazed. This is the end. Riou and Jowy give each-other silent, knowing looks on the gallows as cruel jack-booted thugs truncheon them for jollies. Will our strapping lads truly be sacrificed by the state to manufacture consent for war?

I’ve never actually met Morrissey, which is probably why I like him. He is undeniably a complex and divisive figure, someone who takes more than a little pleasure in pissing people off. As enjoyable as some may find this, it holds little interest for me, but for the fact that Morrissey is probably the best lyricist of his generation - certainly the strangest, funniest, most sophisticated, and most subtle. We had a few pleasant email exchanges last year in which Morrissey asked if I’d sing on a new song he had written. I would have been happy to do so, however, while the song he sent was quite lovely, it began with a lengthy and entirely irrelevant Greek bouzouki intro. It also seemed that he didn’t want me to actually sing on the song, but deliver, over the top of the bouzouki, an unnecessarily provocative and slightly silly anti-woke screed he had written. Although I suppose I agreed with the sentiment on some level, it just wasn’t my thing. I try to keep politics, cultural or otherwise, out of the music I am involved with. I find that it has a diminishing effect and is antithetical to whatever it is I am trying to achieve. So, Astrid, I politely declined. I said no.

"Alan is a writer. He spirals outward, larger, his problems systemic. He tries to write his way out, out of the spiral, but it just keeps growing with him. It’s a whole fucking city now. The dream, his paracosm. He remembers the city on an overcast fall day. Autumn is here: A chill in the air pregnant with meaning, wet puddles full of leaves, the clouds cling near. Ghosts? A reaper? Phantasms walking the streets, specters roaming the unfurling dream. I imagine each one is a trigger. The ache, the twinge, the lump that heralds my next panic. Anxiety lingers, encroaches on the edges of vision. Much of it fades when confronted. Sometimes, though, light only illuminates the detail. They reach out, grab hold, rewrite the story I thought was living, if only for the day. It’s not that some hallucinations are real. They all are, in another reality, the one the spiral sends me to."
