This year wouldn’t have been possible without the support I received: the Sylff Young Leaders Fellowship from The Tokyo Foundation, travel funding from the Swiss Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences (SAGW) for APSA, and the @gvagrad.bsky.social funding package.

Second, I started working on my dissertation, exploring how changes in globalization affect climate and industrial policy. A first paper from this project was presented at SISP (Società Italiana Scienze Politiche) in Naples, thanks to a scholarship covering travel and accommodation.

First, I show how new pedestrian areas reduce radical-right support while helping incumbents, focusing on Milan’s Piazze Aperte. I’m really thankful for all the feedback I received at @dec-gr.bsky.social @uab.cat, @unil.bsky.social, @ahcdemocracy.bsky.social, @epsanet.bsky.social, @apsa.bsky.social

My first year as a PhD student has been exciting, intense, and full of lessons.

My research brought me to Barcelona, Naples, Vancouver, Madrid, Geneva, Lausanne, and Trieste. Each place gave me the chance to share ideas and get feedback.

Heard this one? The City of Barcelona traded 3 lanes of vehicle traffic for an exceptional 4.7km green pedestrian corridor in the heart of the Eixample grid. Businesses sued, & eventually won in court. Then they admitted that they actually like the change.

Streets for people are good for business.

In this blog post, I attempt to unpack what this court ruling is about, the legal arguments, and who is behind it. Did the city really do something wrong?  What will happen to the Consell de Cent proj...

Although I’m sad for Italy, I’m happy for the attendance.

Unlike the men’s team, we had a real chance, and we fought with determination.

Policies are not enought, unfortunately.

We need good politicians in addition to good intentions and policies.

Did the Biden administration's targeted industrial policies help lift the Democratic Party in "left-behind" America? Well, no, and it might've shifted the targeted areas further away from the party, at least in the case of one place-based green subsidy. New working paper 🧵 1/9

Narrative 1: China is dumping cheap solar panels onto the world by unfairly subsidizing its solar industry.

Narrative 2: US, Russia, Saudi are dumping cheap oil and gas onto the world by unfairly subsidizing production and transport.

Both can be defended with facts. Which one do you hear more?

At @epsanet.bsky.social in Madrid I show how new pedestrian areas in Milan may increase votes for the incumbent and reduce those for radical right parties, presenting in an amazing panel with Asya Magazinnik @chknutsen.bsky.social @vheddesheimer.bsky.social @manuel-alvarinho.bsky.social!

The big scaling of extractive productivity methods - like AI in the digital sector, monoculture in agriculture, trawling in fishing - pretty much always emerges w/ an aggressive, no-externality mode.

At the very least govts need to ID the losers of tech and decide *with them* what to do w/ it.

Bottom trawling is horribly destructive to coastal ocean ecosystems, and deep-sea mining will do the same to the open ocean. #OceanFilm 🌊

China won't be defeated by Trump's chicken game. Beijing will respond despite the high economic cost of the trade war. This comes not only from its non-democratic system, but also because China sees time differently from Western countries. For italians, I suggest this podcast episode.
