In February 2024 I visited French & Jupps, the UKs oldest existing maltster, and roasted malt specialist. I’d never heard of them before, despite them being in operation since 1689. It’s story fascinated me, so I wrote it for @pelliclemag.com here:

Got a London hotel room for £85 and a return train ticket for £55 and soon you will see me hosting the latest series of Bargain Hunt.

Articles like this are typical of why readers should support Pellicle. Brilliantly written and researched. I've been going to the D&G for 20 years and didn't know half of this. It's a miracle of a pub and one of the best in London.

Don’t go do something silly like trying to make an entire career out of it

Doing something I never do: having dinner in the hotel and a big glass of Italian red wine because boy howdy I deserve it.

Love how I thought I’d spend 15 minutes a week doing quick video updates to help boost engagement with my long form work and I’m now spending just as much time on my videos.

Here’s something beer related! I spent most of my Saturday cutting together a video I shot at @sirencraftbrew.bsky.social’s time hops festival and it’s a fun two min watch in the documentary style. Give it a watch over on Instagram:

Dev one: I’m going to write the most beautiful and intricate lore that will deeply reward the people who take the time to explore our beautiful, hand drawn game!

Dev two: cool bro I’m making every boss hard as fuck so it takes 50 attempts to beat every one of them

Anyway I feel I also must tell you I beat the Last Judge and made it to act two of Silksong last night. I know most of you don’t care but this game is very very hard and I feel the need to express this achievement.

I was about to tell you I’m off on my last work trip of the year but I’ve just booked another for next month. The relentlessness must continue!

Totally get that, Katie and I have discussed at length how important “writing for the sake of writing is” but judging by the state of my inbox a lot of people seem to want to skip that and get paid.

Samer Khudairi on the often contentious topic of menu modifications. He talks to multiple chefs discussing the pros and cons of accepting dish alterations from customers, and even staff.

I also found your professionalisation of beer blogging comment interesting (mea culpa) but thought you might be interested to know I get a lot of pitches from new or even first time writers and usually turn them down, encouraging them to start a blog or newsletter. Most never do.

I enjoyed re-reading your linked piece on proper job from 2015 in the footnotes, and then spotting in the comments a link from ATJ pointing to an article he wrote on it in 2009.
