The most racist, supremacist garbage is being vomited across Australian media right now. Criticising Israel is an unacceptable threat to Jews so speech must be restricted but we have to ensure the restrictions don’t stop us from saying Muslims are terrorists or that brown people shouldn’t migrate.
Similarly, the potential pitfalls of Albanese's proposal to develop a "narrow" federal offence for "serious" racial vilification depend on how these provisions are cast and what kind of speech can be caught in the net. There must be no possibility of the threshold for prohibited speech stifling legitimate discussion of sensitive but important subjects that touch on matters of race, such as immigration policy or the connection between radical Islam and terrorism. These are the kind of technical questions that the royal commission into antisemitism proposed by former treasurer Josh Frydenberg could usefully explore.

Today we saw fascist, hyper-violent vic police uphold the far-right by brutalising many of us, while facilitating the nazi white supremacist rally at parliament they treated with kid gloves. We stand in full solidarity with many of us injured, hospitalised and arrested by the racist violent gang that is Vic Police. Cops targeting us—with pepper spray, battens, pepper ball guns, stinger grenades and rubber bullets—is no accident. Cops here have their origins in anti-Aboriginal death squads that repressed First Nations resistance. Cops continue to murder First Nations people with impunity. Cops are paid fash who enforce the capitalist colony. Tomorrow, a coalition of anti-racists & anti-fascists are countering a reactionary and fascist rally at parliament, after a Wurundjeri led First Nations Sovereignty Never Ceded rally at Flinders St at 11AM. Who’s behind the far-right rally? Due to in-fighting, it’s actually two far-right rallies, at the same place and time, vying for control! The rallies are part of the same racist reactionary and fascist ecosystem that white supremacist ‘march for australia lives in but initiated by other factions. They sometimes split over minor political differences and optics, but all shift the overton window in a racist direction. These networks grew over reactionary and fascist eugenic denial of the ongoing covid-19 pandemic, which has killed over 7 million people and disabled tens of millions more. They draw energy from global far-right racism demonising migrants and refugees and calling for more state border violence. So-called ‘australia’ already has some of the most hyper-violent racist borders in the world. Disgracefully, around the nazi co-organised 31st rally, the ALP announced and passed mass deportation of people criminalised and without aus citizenship to Nauru. One rally is organised by Harrison McLean, who spoke at the nazi co-organised white supremacist march for ‘australia’ on the 31st last month at vic parliament. His so-called ‘freedom rally’ chats are riddled with nazi propaganda and active recruitment. He has previously been closely associated with far-right Proud Boy politics. During covid lockdown chats, he maintained “Hitler had some good points”. He actively pushes racist conspiracy theories to radicalise people further to the far-right. Speakers at his rally are different far-right figures. Nick Patterson is speaking, who is part of christo-fash Zionist networks. Patterson spoke at the nazi National Workers Alliance meeting in June 2024. The second far-right rally is organised by fascist Craig Cole and far-right ‘sov citizen’ Darren Bergwerf. Craig Cole is well known for his dangerous anti-trans and anti-queer organising, particularly targeting trans young people. After going to a transphobe rally this year that we countered, he attended the nazi National Workers Alliance’s meeting on the same day. Darren Bergwerf is an organiser of far-right ‘sovereign citizen’ ‘my place’ networks. Their idea of ‘sovereignty’ is white individualism, not collective First Nations sovereignty. Their rally has ex-politician Bernie Finn listed as speaker, who organises dangerous backwards anti-abortion marches every year.

"Cops and the Klan go hand in hand!" On so-called 'march for australia' and the counter-protests
"Cops and the Klan go hand in hand!" Yesterday showed the racist reality of ‘australia’. White supremacist cops facilitated a white nationalist nazi rally. Meanwhile, cops from the start repressed anti-racist, pro-Indigenous, pro-Palestine counter-protests. We stand both in solidarity with everyone attacked by the cops / fascists yesterday and everyone who resisted them. In particular, we stand in solidarity with defenders of Camp Sovereignty, which coward nazis attacked, targeting women. We need to prioritise defence of Camp Sovereignty in the weeks and months ahead. Yesterday, for those that needed it, is a big wake up call. Fascism is already here for many, with cops and prisons murdering Black people with impunity and torturing / killing refugees. Street fascists want to intensify state oppression, and recruit more people into deputising themselves as cops / white vigilantes. It was cops that attempted to incapacitate the early counter protest by closing off Fed square splitting our ability to gather. It was cops that focused on unmasking, stopping and searching our side. It was cops that violently pushed us down streets when we gathered. It was cops at the same time who guarded nazis into the white nationalist rally after resistance by anti-fascists. It was cops that rode their horses dangerously into our side. It was cops that fired pepperball guns, stun grenades and rubber bullets at us. It was cops that wore many of us out all day and forced some of us over a bridge to disperse under duress. On the streets, we saw the racism of Victoria Police that many of us know too well, and those seeing it openly for the first time. It's no surprise. Victoria Police formed here through colonial anti-Aboriginal death squads. Cops protect nazis and uphold the far-right. Cops share with the nazis supremacist capitalist colonial ideology that defines this place. We also saw many moments of staunch resistance. We saw collective defiance of designated area extreme police powers. We saw strangers resisting cops / nazis together. We saw blue and red become fire and ash. We saw de-arrests. We saw eggs hit fash. We saw nazis punched. We saw some nazis forced to scamper away. We saw flower pots become mini barricades. We saw medics and people around stepping up for casulties from fucked police violence. Instead of liberal illusions, we need to generalise radical anti-fascism that’s anti-imperialist, anti-colonial and anti-capitalist. This means building skills and networks in community self-defence and community care. Because only we keep us safe. This means respect for diversity of tactics rather than peace policing. Because too often yesterday we had people holding back people taking bold action against cops / nazis. We also need to be more prepared for more of us to stay in the streets for hours. The combination of people at protests on our side added up to thousands of us, maybe a thousand or so less than the fascist side, but the fascists stayed in the streets for longer than many of us. As many of us left the streets they became more emboldened. So we will need both more of us and to be more street prepared next time.
