Gun control is not the only way Australia has spared itself from the kind of horror we frequently see in the US. It’s also not the only thing that is alarmingly slipping, writes Charlie Lewis.
'He wanted to be remembered': Don't give mass killers what they want
For years academics and public health officials have begged the media to rethink how it covers mass shootings.

Mentions of government “critics” concerned about Australian immigration levels featured news coverage of the attack even before the immigration status of either alleged shooter was known.
Andrew Bolt instantly blamed Bondi atrocity on immigration. It follows a global right-wing script
While the predictable narrative is pushed by a small group of right-wing voices — regardless of context or relevance — it’s readily amplified to the masses by mainstream media.

Fucking bunch of cowards. There's no justification for stuff like that.

I am aghast.

I hope for the victims and wish the perpetrators all possible ills.

Very sad news coming to us here in Queensland from NSW Bondi Beach. Thoughts with all.

There will be media speculation in coming days, weeks, months & years. The office of the NSW Coroner is the only one that can establish the facts here.

Plz don't react to anything in media.

@threeravenspod.bsky.social in reference to April's Bestiary episode (16): fun stuff, the Brazilian mermaid is called Iara, it's a river creature and it's legend is older than the European invasion: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iara_(m...

What a nice surprise after going through my "read it later" vault to read through newrepublic.com/article/181667 and it thinking "very interesting article, I do wonder what @mikeduncan.bsky.social thinks about Gibbons", only to reach the end and see his by linne. Nice

Thankful that here is "not the US". I hope we can keep that toxic brand of politics at bay.

Wrote up something about Techdirt's recent coverage, and why (whether we like it or not) we need to be a "democracy blog" now, rather than just a "tech" blog (not that we've ever been just a tech blog).

This story is *the* story and it impacts everything else.

Read "Out of the Sea" by A. C. Benson.

One of those stories you can figure out the mystery miles away. The closest thing to a twist being the late paragraph, and it ain't one. An all around bland short story.

Just read "A Dead Finger" by Sabine Baring-Gould. A disturbingly creepy short story. It loses a good deal of its "bite" for casting every non-conformant in society as morality corrupt and evil. It would be fairly more potent as a horror story without it.

Pro tip: You are not going to change a person's misguided political beliefs by engaging with them.

Pro tip 2: They are likely expecting you to engage with them. Don't give them the satisfaction

I certainly hope we'll get to see @zitron.bsky.social on TWiG again. That was a very good episode. Great interactions, a bit heated at times of course, but would have been weird if it wasn't. Thanks @paris.nyc and @jeffjarvis.bsky.social Leo for keeping up with this great and fun show :)
