While no one disputes that Europe needs to do more for its defence, the focus on defence spending percentage of GDP won’t get us there. Indeed, making Europeans commit to an arbitrary spending target is the best way to keep Europe from reaching strategic autonomy.

My rant in the @financialtimes.com
Spending 5 per cent on defence doesn’t make Nato stronger
An arbitrary target won’t enhance members’ capabilities or co-ordination and encourages creative accounting

… but that is not what the study says? Short run: Overall employment *falls* - manufacturing jobs increase - real income falls (more persistently).

Chinese tariffs on US exports: 106.6%

US tariffs on rest of the world exports: 10.5%
Chinese tariffs on rest of the world exports: 6.5%

Details & link in next skeet.

Chinese tariffs on US exports: 106.6%

US tariffs on rest of the world exports: 10.5%

100% of exports between the US and China are subject to tariffs.

Those trying to understand the tariffs as economic policy are dangerously naive.

No, the tariffs are a tool to collapse our democracy. A means to compel loyalty from every business that will need to petition Trump for relief.

For those listening to this rant, those numbers are not tariffs. The European Union, e.g., has weighted average tariff rates of ~ 3% and arguably lower on US goods. So they are clearly including VATs and who knows what else? This false reciprocity is nonsense. For more:

Reciprocity and discrimination: When are tariffs useful remedies?
The Trump administration has marked April 2 for its next big tariff announcement, one that it says is centered on countering unfair trade practices abroad and imposing reciprocal trade protection. The...

New from me: I wrote about how search algorithms have created a web full of content and words for Google, not humans. We made a fake lizard website to show you what has happened over 25 yrs.

The visuals are beautiful. I’m so proud to work with such talented people! www.theverge.com/c/23998379/g...
“Along with the subheads, we’ll add a table of contents to the top of articles so each section becomes a link that can drive traffic on its own.
“
A blog post on a fake lizard site is chopped in the subheads with keyword crammed writing that mirrors People Also Ask sections in Search. “We’re also adding significantly more professional background details. We’re going to round up how long we’ve been writing about reptiles — it’s mostly true. Can Google even tell?
“
An author bio section shows a longer blurb about experience, targeting Google’s EEAT guidelines. “Our lizard blog doesn’t look much like what we started out with, but it probably resembles hundreds of sites you’ve seen before.” Shows the contrast between the website before SEO took over and after.
