This is a good overview of what tariffs are going to do to gaming as a hobby and basically it is all bad news. Some of it very bad news, as some genres - boardgames especially - are going to get brutally hammered.

You know, there used to be this thing called the Civilian Conservation Corps that went around giving unemployed dudes jobs planting trees and making park trails and bridges. To say nothing of other programs getting artists to make public art etc.

Maybe we just need to do the New Deal again?

The biggest barrier to entry to making a board game is the components. This may already be a thing but I’m not into the #boardgames community to know it, but there seems like a big opportunity for a DIY board game renaissance: write board games using lingua franca components
if board games had an indie zine community it would revolutionize the medium

Hello new Bskies and fresh followers! Just a reminder that we small Indie creators and artists don't have shareholders to satisfy, just bills to pay. And that while Likes are lovely, Reposting stuff is the best way to help with visibility for us. If you see models or art you love, please share!

I have to admit, what I find particularly gross here are the fake bios they have. They're simply lies, claims to a past these algorithms cannot have.

If your product needs to lie about itself as the very first thing it does, its probably not a very good product.
why do we need AI-generated profiles. why

the ai bot isn’t “admitting” its secrets to you or “revealing” its creators intentions it’s just a word generating machine generating words the only meaning is that which you read into it and imo that should be none

I trick people into following rules and watch people play videogames that are simultaneously very fancy and very buggy
I lie at great length about things that matter to me.

Just came across this banger of a Tolkien quote tucked into an otherwise kind of random letter...

"Commerce holds nothing sacred, not even Art."

The F-35 vs drone discourse is incredibly stupid because:

1. There are other things to use against the problem. Like jamming.

2. The near future of drone tech is manned-unmanned pairing. Drones alone either get their controls jammed (bad) or have to be fully autonomous (extremely hazardous)

Easily the most useful thing I've encountered for anybody looking to quickly read academic works in the humanities. I've used it beyond school to crash through history books, social science textbooks, and even to get through terribly boring DoD doctrine manuals.

Another example of how simple and cheap you can make decent looking miniatures if you're willing to get crafty.

These men of war are made of sculpy clay hulls, with little dowel rods for masts, and simple paper rigging with sharpie to delineate the sails and give the illusion of depth

Miniatures can be run surprisingly cheaply. Back when I was in college and didn't have resources, a friend comm'd me to paint pirates and give him a way to run a game with them. The solution I came up with was to make a tavern out of cardboard clamshells and some beads to stand in for mugs and pots

Post a vehicle you painted!

It was a ton of fun to do the weathering on this guy

Oddly my route to understanding the right was thought the Imperial German officer corps. That and Ernst Jünger on the appeal of war. They hate because they want to, because it’s meaningful.

one of the more frustrating tendencies among a lot of leftists is the tendency to view anyone who carries a gun in govt employ as part of a monolithic fascist The Man without any meaningful difference between them, which is just dumb when you look at actual instances of The Cool Zone historically.
something that is especially clear if you have studied colonialism a bit: a load bearing aspect of maintaining even a semblance of democracy (or defending a sitting autocracy from democracy) is having a military that is unwilling to kill its own citizens

Review: Pub Battles by Command Post Games

Pub battles is a fairly simple and straightforward take on the classic Kriegsspiel - real scale maps with blocks that represent the frontage of units moving across them. The rules are ~6 pages long and extremely accessible

On the other website I had a running thread of quick-fire reviews of games (board and video games both); I'm going to restart it here for whenever I feel like I have thoughts that need to escape my head

No guarantees on frequency

I am thankful for the victory of the Union and then the triumph of the New Deal
For me it’s about shooting slavers and destroying them in battle, since the whole holiday became a national thing because Vicksburg and Gettysburg rock
